[Tech] Considering a Nikon D5200. Suggestions for alternates?

I'm considering purchasing a Nikon D5200 with 18-55 and 55-300 VR lenses. It's just a fairly typical kit. Costco has it for $1050 with a Wi-Fi adapter. I'm not interested in spending the money for a D7100 (even though I'd love to have it).

I'm not sure what the equivalents are in the Canon, Sony, etc. brands that are worthwhile considering. Even though I have other Nikon accessories/lenses, I don't really have anything that I would consider good glass worthy of keeping. So I wouldn't necessarily be against changing brands.

Good choice, Goober.

I just bought this at Costco, a little over a week ago and the photos that i've been taking are incredible.....i love it.

And it also came with the WiFi adapter - it works great with the Nikon Android app..:+)

So that's my quandary also. Do I go the 5200 or is the 3200 going to meet my needs? I've got an old D70 presently. Is either camera a decent replacement for the D70?

Roughly:
100, 200, 300 line became extinct
70, 80, 90 line became the 7xxx line
40, 50, 60 line became both the 3xxx line and 5xxx line.

The 5200 would be the closer of the 2 for replacing the 70. Given the age of the 70, you should find just about everything in the 5200 and a few new and improved things. Probably a few extras but also some downgrades in the 3200. 7100 would be a complete upgrade. One thing you will lose is the in-body focus motor by dropping down a line. This may or may not matter to you depending on what lenses you already have.

I don't know if there is any old stock left, but maybe take a look at the 7000. Big upgrade, but possibly without the cost.

I can get a 7000 for roughly the same cost as the 5200. But I hesitate because the 5200 has a newer sensor.

I'd seen the first, but not the second.

Over the years I've gotten to know myself a bit better and I've realized that photography isn't something in which I have much of an interest anymore (or the time)

With the 5200 I get a couple of VR lenses that cover my needs and I get relatively good video. I play a bit with aperture and shutter, but not too much. That's all I need, I think. Years ago the 7xxx would have appealed to me more, but I don't have the time to do much more than point and shoot.

I guess I'm leaning towards the 5200.

Sounds to me like you could be just as happy with a point and shoot. You could put one in your pocket and maybe take more photos.

If you are looking for the logical upgrade to the D70 then the D90 would be the way to go. My girlfriend has one and it is an amazing body. You can get a good D90 kit for under $1000. And it is a current model.

And I don't believe the D100, D200, D300 line became extinct. They went on to reintroduce that line with FF sensors in the D700 and D800/D800e.

The kit lenses are OK, but if you plan on doing some serious photography, then consider some better glass.

Thanks for the input.

After doing some more reading last night, I think I'm going to go with the 5200 kit. I'd prefer the 7100, but I just can't justify the price for my needs.

The kit lenses sound decent. I know they aren't the fastest things around, but I'm just not interested in paying $1K for a lens. The value proposition doesn't work for me.

Okay. I've decided I'm going to get the d7100. Now the question is what lens? I want a simple walk around lens. So the only choices I'm considering (at this point at least) are the 18-200 and 18-300. Both are the same speed and are VR II. The weight difference is pretty huge, so I'm leaning towards the 18-200.

Take a look at the Tamron 18-270 too. It is not a bad performing piece of glass by any means.

While true that they did introduce an entry FF tier, the D7xxx line doesn't really offer what the Dxxx line did on a crop body, and I don't think the new FF quite does either. But I'm not a Nikon shooter and haven't compared them all quite that closely.

I have a D700 and it is an amazing camera. The D800/800e are just as great. Because the D4 is so out of reach for most photographers as far as price goes, the others are a great alternative for less than half the price. And the D700 outperforms the D300/300s by quite a margin based on reviews I have read.

I never did care for video on a DSLR, so after my D200, I went with the D700 (not to be mistaken with the D7000)

Ralph.

Please don't take it that I was knocking any of them. For those looking for FF, they can't be beat. I was just saying that I'm not sure if the low end FF line could be considered the continuation of the old D300 line. The 7000 series certainly is not.

I'm sure you weren't knocking them and now that you mentioned it, despite the fact they carry the same alpha/numeric designation, they most probably aren't a continuation of that line.

For anyone considering FF, these are actually great cameras.

I think the OP made a wise choice. I moved from the D70 to the D90 and while I love the D90, I have my complaints about it. Video on it is nothing more than a toy. Without autofocus during filming, most people will lose a lot of footage to poorly focused scenes. I guess the good part of this is you don't have to worry about lens noise while focusing. Video quality is washed out more often then not in my experience. Otherwise, I love the body.

I ended up buying this (but with a 32GB card):

It's a D7100 with an 80-200. I did a lot of research on the various suggestions and this one kept coming up as the all-round best choice for me.

Thanks!

Yeah, I'm getting antsy at this point. It's shipping from Cali, so Friday at the earliest. Maybe take some pics over the weekend. It's supposed to be nice around here.

Got the camera on Friday evening. I'm surprised by how small it is relative to my old D70. A lot of camera in a slightly smaller package. The transition was easy to the new camera. I'm glad I chose this one over the 5200 since I really like have the LCD on top for looking at shutter and aperture information.

I haven't taken any decent shots yet. I've just been experimenting for now.

I was in Best Buy tonight and they had a D7000 kit for about the same price ($1100 I think). I think it had a 18-105 VR in the kit.
