Not a computer minded person asks for help with cpu exchange

Hi -- (thx for looking). I have a 775 socket (775 LGA775). In the manual for the Asus P5K mother board it says that a Core 2 Quad processor will be compatible.

In searching I found that a Xeon Quad 775 socket is faster than a Core 2 Quad; my question is. Will this run in my PC or will I break it )

It depends on the rev of the BIOS. What processors it will support is very specific. Figure out the BIOS version you have then go to ASUS' site and look up supported processors. You may be able to update the BIOS for more selection .

Ah ok I'll do that -- or at least look into it . I'll update this thread with how it goes.

Thx

That will make it quicker

No Xeon then -- Sorry I just got exited and thought that maybe because it is also 775 it might work.

3.0GHz is the fastest that's ok

3.2 Core 2 Extreme QX9770 revC1,3.2GHz That's even faster than the Xeon I saw ))

At least I've learned something. It is not just the socket that counts with cpu's

For the average user doing normal things most folks do, you'd be unlikely to notice the difference between 3.2Ghz and 3.0 or maybe even 2.8Ghz.

The speed and lag times of your Internet connection are much more noticeable.

The best bang for your buck, performance/$, is going to be a new motherboard AND processor. It doesn't have to be a $1000 cutting edge combo to make a significant improvement from where you are now.

I am wanting to do that in the future -- but can't face all the issues. It has taken me so long to get this PC running ok. I know if I change the CPU it will either work or not -- if it does work it will not cause 10 more problems like I've had with other comparability problems in the past..

Also I have room for more ram. I will do that first. Then the CPU later and hope that will not screw up an other wise solid set up (so far).

Maybe even just the ram will fix things. Was just looking into what's possible.

The CPU will be going from a quad 2.4 to 3.2 (if I get Core 2 Extreme QX9770)

I'll start with the ram though..

Thx for replying

How old is the ram in this machine?

You might find replacing the RAM altogether gives you more response.

Also what specifically is asking you to make this decision?
Slow response, a program won't work?
Can you give more detail to why you want to update so people can be more specific to your real needs.

OP your best best is to give us a run down of the system specs and why you want to upgrade.

Ram speed is not going to matter
A c2q to another c2q is not going to matter
(talking max gains of what 5% maybe in encoding or CPU limited things vs 400% on a new cpu/mobo?)
Ram *amount* may help.

Also please note you need TIM when you install this new likely used CPU.
