What is the point for paying for a virus scanner?

When there is so many good free ones ?

What are the advantages ?

You will find differing opinions, some think the paid variety has more of an interest in making sure you are protected...others think it is bloatware and the free variety is just fine. Whatever the case, this is from 2011 poll but may help in your decision:

I've used all the major freeware AV programs.

Most are fairly good, but I think that some of them are mediocre in terms of effectiveness, others have had repeated major fuckups, others have nag screens, some don't update often enough.

Most of the freeware AV have paid versions also as you know.

The paid versions come with better support, or more frequent updates, or more features or customizations, etc. So that motivates some people.

-----

I recently purchased a subscription for a paid AV (BullGuard) for my home PC.

One reason that I did so:

Suppose one day my machine gets trashed by the AV (such as Avast) or suppose we get a virus.

If I have a free AV my wife would hit me with a pot, and say "you cheap jerk, look what you did to us"!

But if I am using a paid AV and something goes wrong, then I really can't be blamed....

The crazy thing is a lot of people that are a very technically savvy don't even run an AV at all. What does that tell you?

I pay to support the group building my AV so that they can make a living.

Also the free ones are usually making money by selling advertising, installing a sponsored add in (think ask tool bar etc), or re-selling your browsing habits (notice how they almost all have a "web filter" now... this is sending every site you visit to their servers in most cases).

So I pay to help them keep making the software, and to protect my privacy a bit.

+ 1

Although a lot of boxes for people are fitted with a free version, it is explained about differences so they can make the call. Half are quite happy to spend the money to help the protection layering.
