[Connectivity] routing thread #10000000000

When I started out I pinged high 20 to low 30 ms to dallas and high 30 and low 40 ms to illinois servers.

now this to dallas.

C:\Users\godson>tracert 206.217.142.163

Tracing route to host.colocrossing.com [206.217.142.163]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

2 13 ms 6 ms 10 ms btsvcmtk01.mid.sta.suddenlink.net [173.219.255.3

Trace complete.

SDLTech3 if thats how his name is on here helped me quite a bit a couple times and it ended up going back to being awful shortly after. is there seriously nothing that can be done about the routing to lower the pings?

Does the latency change throughout the day or is it low in the mornings and high in the evenings? Do you have a PingPlotter trace (sample set) you could attach to this thread?

Also, please PM me your cable modem's MAC address and your current public IP (»whatismyip.com) so I can look into this for you.

I have not received a PM from you yet but I went ahead and looked into what I could. I ran a script that pinged 206.217.142.163 from all of the customer subnets in Batesville and found that the latency is ~50ms.

In the trace you provided it looks as if the latency is starting at hop 3 but that is not the case. MPLS can skew where the latency actually starts. If you directly ping each hop you can get a better idea of the actual latency.

In my testing I used 74.194.110.0/24. From this subnet to 206.217.142.163 it is currently 53ms. When I pinged hops 3, 4, and 5 from 74.194.110.0/24 the latency was ~20ms but when hitting hop 6 the latency jumped to ~53ms as seen below:

To Hop 5:
CMTK01#ping 206.123.64.158 source 74.194.110.1

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 206.123.64.158, timeout is 2 seconds:
Packet sent with a source address of 74.194.110.1
!!!!!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 20/21/24 ms

To Hop 6:
CMTK01#ping 65.99.208.122 source 74.194.110.1

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 65.99.208.122, timeout is 2 seconds:
Packet sent with a source address of 74.194.110.1
!!!!!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 52/53/56 ms

Hops 4 and 5 are actually Colo4 in which we have a direct peer with. Hop 6 is their customer Colocrossing which has multiple peers of their own. After speaking with Colo4, we were able to determine that Colocrossing is not using the direct path back through Colo4 to get back to Suddenlink, as designed by Colocrossing. If they did, the latency would be ~25ms or less.

I have a feeling that is the same type of issues I've started seeing the last few months with a select few servers all over the same network.

Are you able to interact and work with a direct peer for resolutions?

yeahhhhhh its higher in the evenings as i'm trying to play which i guess there can be nothing done about. as of right now (7:44 PM CST) to that server I am now getting 57ms and getting 79ms to another dallas server that is also colo 206.217.142.168.

would you want my IP & mac address still or is there really nothing that can be done because of colo?

If the latency increases in the evenings that will be a separate problem from the abnormal base latency.

Please run Pingplotter Pro (free trial) before the problem starts and continue running it till the problem stops. Then click "file, save sample set" to save it and attach it to this thread.

And yes, please PM me your cable modem's mac address and your current public IP.
