 | AT&T unlock policy So I just tried to unlock my iphone by calling in AT&T's customer service but they said I had to fill in a form from their website. I don't understand why they couldn't do that over the phone. Everyone I knew who was a customer of AT&T successfully unlocked their phones by just calling them. Is this AT&T's new unlock policy? No more call in? Fill in a form and wait a week? maybe the rep was wrong should I call again and see if some one else can do it? |

I think back when apple and att had their public "talk to the other guy about unlocking it" period the reps would take down the information, and then enter it for you. I remember unlocking 1 iphone with a rep... I gave her the information, then a few days later when I synched it with itunes it did the unlock dance.
The last 2 iphones I've unlocked I used the form... enter the information and within a few days when it syncs with itunes it will do the unlock dance.

do a chat online with their international support. it takes 30 seconds to give them imei and get unlock code.
just did it for gs4 same day i got the phone. no issues. phone is unlocked and running on tmobile.
edit: This is for android and windows phone. If you use apple products you probably have to deal with unnecessary pain to get the same thing done. Welcome to the world of apple. |

I went to an AT&T store tonight and the sales guy told me you need the account open for 2 years before they would unlock the phone. Then recommended that I go buy a phone online if I wanted it unlocked sooner. I even asked about paying retail price and he said it would still take 6 months before they would unlock it.
Based upon this thread so far, I don't believe any of what he said. |

Generally att will unlock a subsidized phone when it is out of contract... that is once they have their money recovered.
What Alcohol said is true IF it is not an iphone.
If it is an iphone you need to hit the form (or find a rep who will fill in the form for you).
If you buy the device unlocked from att of course you don't need to wait 2 years to get it unlocked... as it will be sold unlocked....but since there is no contract attached you will not find many reps who will sell you one (they don't get their commission for the 2 year contract). |

I did this a few weeks ago. They say 7 days, but I had the entire process done in 24 hours. |

Original owner is not a requirement from AT&T.
I unlocked a iPhone on a friends account, since you get 5 devices a year. Did you try? |

I would be very careful using an unlock service on an iphone. The unlock command comes down the line from the apple servers... I never had to enter a code like you would with a normal gsm device.
Just a heads up... I never have had to enter a code on ANY iphone I have unlocked... ever.
I am not saying it's not possible, just that I have never seen it happen. |

there's no need to enter a code on iphones as the unlock codes come from apple servers when you connect it to itunes accdg. to instructions provided by the unlocking service.
good thing I got rid of my apple....2.5 years has been long enough for following within the confines of apple... |

Just had my ATT 4s unlocked thru a friend, I didnt have to enter any code on the phone. I simply rebooted the phone and popped in a T-mobile sim card and it worked right away. |
