 | Yeah, that was one of 2 big plays that pretty much told you who was going to win the game. The other one was when the Als tried & failed on a 3rd and a long 1 in their own end. Stamps tonight set a CFL record by coming back to win after being down 24-0 after 1 quarter. Rene Parades' field goal streak ended when his kick attempt near the end of the game was blocked. (At least I thought that was the case until I heard in game 2 that the league did not consider that a field goal attempt.) Stamps did not even their 1st or 2nd string quarterback to win the game as Bo Levi Mitchell played the 4th quarter.
Game 2 was a repeat of last week in that the Eskimos and Lions were close until the Lions scored 2 quick touchdowns in the 2nd half. Odd play of the night was when on an attempted onside kick, both Paris Jackson and Cary Koch came down with the ball at the same time. Ruling on the play was to rekick the ball. |

Rider Nation again shows its domination again today. Offense line continually keeps Durant clean and opens up holes for Sheets. That is why Durant has no interceptions, and Sheets already has so many rushing yards after just 4 weeks. |

Wild finish in the game between 2 Second Division Teams in that loser could be called the worst team in the CFL. Als are up 2 in the final minutes and deep in Eskimo territory. Twice they get close but do not reach the end zone. Twice the play was stopped for a review from the command center.
Eventually, it becomes 3rd and 1 on the Eskimo one yard line. Every other CFL would bring in their short yardage team and go for it. Instead the Als take a delay of game penalty and kick a field goal. Als are now up by 5 with under 2 minutes left.
Eskimos drive down the field. As the clock ticks to down to about 15 seconds left, a run gets close to the goal line. Although for the replay it looks like there was no touchdown scored, the Eskimos wanted a review from upstairs just like the previous series when the Als were driving. The reason for wanting the review was to stop the clock, get organized, and call a play. Instead, no review was given, and the clock continued. Eskimos were down to one play, and the running play they hurriedly called lost yardage. End of the game. |

Without their 1st or 2nd string quarterback, you would think the Stamps would have struggled on the road against the Bombers' defense. Instead, the Stamps offensive line did whatever it wanted which let to big games by Bo Levi Mitchell, Jon Cornish, and whomever else Dave Dickenson decided should touch the ball.
But if you think about it, the Stamps should have won because the Bombers are a 2nd Division team. Forget East and West Divisions. Teams should be divided into 1st and 2nd Divisions as the bottom 4 have been struggling badly. |
|
shanerPremium join:2000-10-04 Calgary, AB | Yeah, I was thinking about that the other day. This East/West format with a crossover playoff team stinks. Of course, that will balance out when the Rouge et Noir hit the field, but the current divisions seem pointless. And if a Quebec and/or Halifax team get going, then it really throws the whole thing out of whack.
I really think the relegation system in English soccer is the way to go. I'd love to see the CFL give it a shot.

 | Maybe if there were more teams in the CFL, teams could be divided up differently. As it is now, it is just not practical. You cannot have 4 teams play each other for 18 games.
Game tonight was the same as yesterday's. You would have expected the backup quarterback to struggle a bit on the road. Nope. Rider Nation's offensive line has its way so Drew Willy and Kory Sheets did mostly whatever they wanted.
Just like yesterday, I should have expected this when a 1st Division teams plays a 2nd Division team. Two bad signs for the Ti-Cats. One is that Burris is underthrowing many of his passes which is unusual for somebody who has the strongest arm in the league. Second is that the Ti-Cats' defense this year is on pace to give up almost as many points this year as they did in 2012. That defense in 2012 was one of the worse in CFL history. |

Re: Official 2013 CFL Thread Backups Zach Collaros and Curtis Steele stand out as the Argos surprisingly win by 26 points. This makes it 4 backup quarterbacks who started this week. Just by looking at the stats, one would have thought this game should have been much closer. Argo's defense just did enough to keep the Lions out of the endzone. |

Re: Official 2013 CFL Thread Firing Hawkins so soon just makes Jim Popp look like an idiot for hiring him in the first place. Als waited until almost every other head coaching or coordinator position (maybe the whole staff in some cases) was already filled before they hired Hawkins. So even though Hawkins mainly hired his own guys with no CFL experience, he could not have even gotten more high-regarded assistants even if he wanted to go that route. For instance, George Cortez was still available a week before Hawkins was announced.
Popp and Bob Wetenhall thought they had some secret magical formula which finds great head coaches. Maybe they just got lucky with Trestman, and it had nothing to do with the formula.
I actually think the biggest problem for the Als is they cannot do anything on 1st down. All their running plays go nowhere. Yeah, it is debatable that they ran so much on 1st down anyway. Regardless, many of the plays in the cfl are misdirection where you try to convince at least some of the defense that you are going to do one thing, while you are actually doing something else. Under the Mike Miller offense, all I see is the opposing defense not being fooled for even a second. That means, the Als are left with 2nd and long. More often than not, 2nd and long means a blitz. And when there is a blitz with Calvillo not getting enough protection, the result with be a Calvillo chuck-and-duck that is likely an incompletion.
The other big news is today is that Justin Goltz will be the starter the rest of this year. Buck Pierce will now be a backkup and become a mentor to the quarterbacks on the roster. To me, this sounds like the Bombers think Pierce has been physically punished enough and that his Bomber (or perhaps even CFL) playing days are over. |

Reading about the Als firing their head coach and all I could think of was what a fustercluck hiring him in the first place was.
Going from Tresman to a coach with zero CFL experience and bringing in a staff with no experience either had "car crash" written all over it in bold neon letters to the point where the 2 - 3 record is a testiment to players resolve and nothing to do with teh coaching staff in this situation.
If Jim Popp thinks he can salvage this, I think he's on drugs... and not the good kind of drugs either

 | To be fair, commentators like to point out that Trestman with no CFL experience also started with a 2-3 record.
Looks like Mike Miller is staying on but is being demoted. Now, Doug Berry will be the Offensive Coordinator. It is true that Berry has lots of CFL experience. It is also true that fans of those teams he was recently associated with were constantly calling for Berry's removal. |

I can't deny that Trestman started with the same level of CFL experience, but in this case I'd argue that the Als know their window to win with Calvio is closing and they can't waste it grooming a HC that can't grasp the CFL game and the assets that he has quickly.
It was a bad hire that Popp will wear no matter how he spins it though...

Tonight's close finish could be used as evidence on why there should be a 1st and 2nd Division. Let's face it. Against a 1st Division opponent, nobody would reasonably expect a win from either Edmonton or Hamilton.
Anyway, the Ti-Cats are punishing Mike Reilly and are up by 12 point with about 6 minutes left. Eskimos score a touchdown to cut in to 5. Ti-Cats go down and get a field goal which means they are up by 8 with under 2 minutes left in the game. Eskimos then score a touchdown with 1:25 left but miss the convert. On the kickoff, Eskimos elect to kick deep rather than trying an onside kick. Ti-Cats are able to get a first down but cannot quite run the clock out, so they are forced to punt the ball. Eskimos get the ball back on their own 35 with 17 seconds left. Reilly runs for 22 yards. Nine seconds left. Reilly then spikes the ball. Seven seconds left. Reilly competes a pass to Fred Stamps at the 43 yard line with 1 second left. Unfortunately for the Eskimos, Grant Shaw misses from 50. A single is awarded, but the Ti-Cats still have one more point than the Eskimos. Game over. |

 | Surprising close game. Maybe the Bombers are getting better. On the other, maybe the Lions should be better than this at home.
Anyway, the game was decided when the Bombers who were down 7, failed to convert on 3rd and 1 on their own 47. Funny thing is that TSN has a yellow stripe indicating where the ball had to reach to get the 1st down. On the broadcast, the ball clearly reached the stripe. Even the referee spotted the ball right there. Yet on the official measurement, the Bombers were short by about the length of a football.
Strange. Sort of like the Eskimos-Als game where during the final play, the on-screen clock was not accurate. Of course unlike that instance, the Bombers were still a long way off from reaching the endzone. |

Of course unlike that instance, the Bombers were still a long way off from reaching the endzone. Playing devil's advocate for the referee's and the placement of the football / first down marker:
The issue is that the yellow stripe isn't the official down marker for the purposes of determining where first down yardage is, that rests with the on field officials. TSN's stripe is an approximation based on what they see from their vantage point. As to what the on field officials called, we don't know what information they had when determining the call.
Gee, you think I could get a job in the CFL's PR department with that paragraph?

 | Look at the ball as it is over the stripe | Look at the Officials' Foot | Look at where the ball was spotted | Look how far off the the yellow stripe was |
If there are fingers to be pointed at somebody, then it would have to be at TSN's crew. |
|
 | That was quick. Game tonight was decided on the 1st play of the game when Noel Devine fumbled away the opening kickoff. That was the 1st of his 3 lost fumbles. Als had 7 turnovers altogether. Als were lucky that Ricky Ray was taken out for precautionary measures, and that Scott Milanovich did not want to embarrass his old team too badly. Otherwise at the rate they were going, the Argos could have won the game by 50 points.
Als probably should stick to playing 2nd Division teams at home. Wait a minute. They already lost to the Bombers at home. |

| Watching last night's train wreck, I have to wonder if Callvio isn't having a serious case of the "Get me the hell outta here"
The Als receivers last night couldn't hold on to the ball if it was stapled to their hands, it was revolting to watch.
As an Argos fan I enjoyed the game for the win but oh god if the Als play like that the rest of the season, I ain't turning on the TV when they play, that's for sure.

Joe Mack is out as GM of the Bombers.
Although the faithful would say this should have been done long ago, I thought a new stadium would distract them enough until the end of this season. That, and the Bombers do not like to keep paying people who they have already terminated. Even though the Bombers got off to a slow start, I think the firing of Hawkins in Montreal just reminded their fans that they have been putting up with Mack for far too long. On the other hand just like the Al's situation, getting rid of people that important so early into the season just makes your whole organization look incompetent. |

Well, the Stamps are putting a beating on the Roughriders tonight. Big game for Jon Cornish and the Stamps D. |
|
 | Entertaining tv game tonight. Not just because of the game but because of the crowd as well. Having the crowd get into just makes things more exciting.
Stamps go up by 19 at halftime. In the 2nd half, Riders cut the lead to 6 points. Looks like a repeat of their first meeting as the Stamp's offense is not doing anything in the 2nd half.
Then a big shift in momentum occurs when Jock Sanders for some reason goes out of his way to return a punt that was headed into the endzone. A point given means that the Riders would be behind by 7. Instead, the Riders end up deep in their own end. Darian Durant then proceeds to get sacked for a safety. The ensuing kickoff is illegal as it went out of bounds. Stamps get the ball at midfield and then go up by 15 after 3 consecutive passes to Nik Lewis. Riders were never within reach again. |
