Radio ActiveMy pappy's a pistolPremium join:2003-01-31 Fullerton, CA | Passively tracking aircraft with ADS-B I recently bought a NooELEC SDR USB dongle. $24.30 shipped.
The range is 24-1766 MHz. Free software allows me to receive and analyze all modes. Neat new addition to my ham shack.
Right now, I am tracking a bunch of aircraft, some as far away as 200 miles away, using "adsbScope."
Anyone else using one of these dongles?

You may want to consider contributing this data to flightradar24.com. I think they give you a free subscription to their web site in return for your data.

Pretty spiffy!
I bought one of those a while back, and it's amazing what $25 buys these days.
It's not as good as my Fun Cube Dongle, but then it didn't cost $150 either! -- One man's Magic is another man's Engineering. |

I purchased one online a couple months back off eBay ($15 + $2 shipping) and run it w/ FlightRadar24. It gives you Premium access on their site and your mobile device for free if you run it.
»www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-USB-DVB-T-R···40985308 seems to be the same or similar from the one I purchased from that vendor. Followed the steps referenced at »www.flightradar24.com/dvbt-stick . -- Tweaked your connection? | Mail Parse | Speed Converter |

I thought about asking for one of their free devices but they want clear sky 360 degrees. Not happening at my house with all the nice shade trees I have. |

It's the same animal, but NooELEC puts a Zener diode for ESD protection and rebrands it. It's basically a Realtek.
Note: I'm very new at this; I could be a little wrong with the facts. I stand to be schooled. -- I'm a son of a gun... |

Slightly OT - I found this page that has many signals identified:

I do have trees around the house and took pictures of them and they're still okay with it.
Though, I live ~5 miles from a major US airport in the landing and departure pattern. So, that might have helped their approval process. |

I have been using Virtual Radar Server for displaying information. I have E4000 and R820T based dongles. The R820T seems to be a bit more sensitive. This past weekend I build a 12-element 1090MHz collinear antenna which a neighbor took to his RF lab today to test for frequency response. I have been running a monitoring setup for about three weeks now and it is quite interesting. I am located on Long Island in the JFK and LGA approach zones so I get a lot of air traffic. I can put the approach frequency on and listen for the aircraft instructions and observe them executed on the screen.
I have considered feeding FlightRadar24.com but have had trouble switching from ADSBSharp to RTL1090. Plus, based upon my observations of FlightRadar24.com, there aren't any gaps that I can fill in for them. -- I support the right to keep and arm bears. |

Radio ActiveMy pappy's a pistolPremium join:2003-01-31 Fullerton, CA | I've tried both ADSB# and RTL1090, and found the ADSB# to be more stable. I've had too many times where the RTL1090 will hang or stop sending data to ADSBScope.
I'm still messing around with all this to get to know the ins and outs of ADS-B monitoring. Eventually, I'll build a collinear antenna for 1090MHz and buy a second dongle so I can use ADSB# simultaneously with SDR#.
I'll be running LMR400 type low-loss coax up to 35' above ground, so I won't be too awfully concerned about attenuation.
I have no trees and 360 visibility to the horizon. A discone at 35' will give me even better coverage and range for the dongle feeding SDR# than I have now. It's all about building two antennas and scoring some adapters at this point. -- I'm a son of a gun... |
