docsis 4

docsis 4 is also in later stage development and should see vast improvement approaching 1 gigabit upstream-- at least.
however, it will be 2015 at the earliest when we have affordable consumer grade 10-gigabit routers & network cards available in mass production. these things take time to ramp up..

much depends on telcos / competitors and what they can offer. the cable industry rarely does good things for the consumer out of the kindness of their hearts.. all industry decisions are focused on making MORE MONEY and almost nothing to do with the public /consumer interest.

It's irrelevant when 10Gb equipment will be inexpensive when 99% of Internet connections are not even maxing out a 1Gb connection (inside the home). Next gen DOCSIS will be about pushing towards 1Gb for consumers, not 10Gb.

not necessarily.. it is common for local networks to use faster networking equipment to route slower connections.. 100 megabit streams running on 1gigabit networks and gigabit streams running on 10 gigE Once the gigabit threshold is breeched, you need the next step which is 10gigE wan ports. this is most common in other data cabling standards.. SATA, HDMI, USB, etc..

I'm not denying that, but 10Gb for even somewhat power users will still be quite a niche even a few years from now. 1Gb though will become the norm.
