Can't find these Widescreen copies of Wizard Of Oz?

The Wizard Of OZ was filmed in widescreen. I've looked everywhere for a DVD or Blu-ray copy of the 1.85 : 1 1998 release and 1.85 : 1 1955 release of the Wizard Of Oz everywhere I can think of but can only find it in 1:37:1 screen format. Where can I find one of those Widescreen releases??? If I can get my hands on one of those releases I'll be able to see it in the true widescreen format.

Oz was not filmed in widescreen but rather the 1.37:1 Academy aspect. This same exact topic has been covered ad nauseum in this very forum and you could easily find the answer covered more times than I care to count.

Any home video releases that are in anything but the original aspect are cropping the video, period.

Check out the second entry here: »www.imdb.com/title/tt0032138/alt···versions

(Sorry if it sounds like I am coming off condescending, I don't mean to. But this topic truly has been covered WAAAAAAY too many times here already.)

I was saying to myself, "no it wasn't" before I looked at the thread to see the other two guy's responses.

It is available in HD resolution, but HD does not equal widescreen.

More like it needs to be a sticky on his freakin' fridge. Or maybe on his TV.

Unbelievable.

Actually, his question has changed. He's looking for one of the versions apparently released in widescreen.

Obviously it will be a used copy. eBay or local 2nd hand stores.

In any case, I'm in the camp of watching video as it was intended. Not trying to make it fit my TV.

The Wizard of OZ was NOT filmed in widescreen. Here is some info on the "so called" widescreen releases.

"On 17 June 1955, M-G-M released nationwide a so-called "Wide Screen" 1.85:1 aspect version of the film. It should be noted that this version is not "true widescreen" and really only covered up the top and bottom of the screen with black bars, thus ruining the 1.37:1 Academy aspect ratio in which the film was originally intended to be shown, and in which it was shown until the 1955 re-release. The widescreen ratio was again used for the 1998 theatrical re-release, although it was not specifically advertised as such. Fortunately, this "fake" widescreen version of the movie has not been seen on any television broadcast or home video release of the film. Broadcast, tape and DVD versions are in the television standard 1.33:1 aspect ratio, which shaves off image on both sides from the 1.37:1 theatrical release."

Vchat20 See Profile posted the link in the second post of this thread but I thought adding the actual quote may help.

Re: Can't find these Widescreen copies of Wizard Of Oz?

Too funny.
Being a LD collector myself, I even checked LDDB.com and clicked through every known title of The Wizard Of Oz in existence... every copy that made it to LD is 1:33:1. No CED, VHD or LD released a wide screen copy of The Wizard Of Oz.

Too complicated. Black tape on the TV screen will do the trick (and you can get any aspect ratio you want).
