I use Private Internet Access as well. I signed up for a year of service a few months ago for only $40. I have never had problems using the service, and speeds are pretty decent as well. -- One nation, under Zod! |

I found (running the software vpn) that speeds topped out between 15 and 20mbps, which is less than half of a 50mbps connection.
On the the other hand PIA do offer a proxy which can be used to disguise your ip address on torrents as well.. which allows for faster speeds and doesn't impact your non-torrent downloading. |

I'm using Torguard's BT Proxy service @5.95/mo , I have another VPN service but I use their DNS redirection tool to access geoblocked stuff. -- Support Bacteria -- It's the Only Culture Some People Have |

Have a look and see if the free proxies at Hide My ASS are of any use to you. Been using for a few weeks with Vuze and all seems fine, Check My Torrent shows the proxy. No speed issues, Socks 4/5, I only use US, Sweden, Netherlands and China but hundreds of others cycling constantly to pick from. Canada here fwiw .Edit: not for private sites |

I am using IPVanish on the one year plan, it's like $6.50/month. So far they are one of the fastest vpn services I have used. I am using it for downloading and video streaming and it has been awesome. I used to use HideMyAss and used to think they were good until I found IPVanish - the speed compared to HMA is Amaze-Balls Here is a speed test from Atlanta GA to the IPV server in the Netherlands (above) |

I never liked VPNs because it takes over your whole connection. What are you suppose to do when you buy something off of Steam ? |
|
TOPDAWGPremium join:2005-04-27 Midland, ON kudos:3 | turn it off? I just use mine when I need it. |

said by imtim83:I never liked VPNs because it takes over your whole connection. What are you suppose to do when you buy something off of Steam ? With Private Internet Access, you use their client to connect and disconnect to the VPN. It is not intrusive at all. It only take two seconds to disable it. I'm pretty sure several of the others work the same way. -- One nation, under Zod! |

I am also thinking of using a vpn. I hope some other people give suggestions. I have a quick question . My local isp is horrible. My connection can be in and out rebooting every hour if needed. Will any vpn kill my connection, but then start back again. safely. My modem resets for 30 seconds and then everything if fine. -- A.B.Mult.Horror

TOPDAWGPremium join:2005-04-27 Midland, ON kudos:3 | yeah it will drop your VPN connection. I think in utorrent you can input your VPN settings and if it discounts it stops utorrent from working till it connects again. |
|
cchheettLamb Of GodPremium join:2001-04-02 Eagle Creek, OR | Thanks for the info. I didn't see any info on utorrent , but that doesn't mean anything. I have heard a program for torrents called Vuze . I heard 2 different people say it will stop a torrent and will wait till the vpn starts up. i might have to check that out more. I don't want to take away from the original post.
I'm thinking of trying ibvpn or Private Internet acces here. -- A.B.Mult.Horror

I've tried a few services:
Hide My Ass: Pros: Generally pretty good speed (I used it on a terrible connection so I won't bother posting the actual speed test results). Lots of server choices.
Cons: Servers are frequently down and it can be a pain in the butt to find a functional one in the area you need. Sketchy history when it comes to protecting user data.
Private Internet Access Pros: The price is right, good support, solid speeds. Cons: US-based, I'm currently in a country that blocks a lot of web content and for some reason I have to continually reconnect PIA to continue browsing blocked sites. (This could very well be a problem on my end and not with the VPN, but I haven't quite worked it out.)
SumRando Pros: Really good speed, Free, good server spread. Cons: The company is in beta (which is why the service is currently free) so you can only get 10GB/Month. |

 | Hidemyass: largest number of IP addresses, servers. A hidemyass user has received the following: --------------------------------- Dear xxxxx, We have received a file sharing complaint and the date, time and IP address provided matches the date, time and IP address your VPN account was in use. Illegal file sharing is against our terms of service and we cannot ignore breach of copyright complaints, as such we kindly ask you to stop sharing said files to comply with this request. Please note repeated offences may result in permanent suspension. ------------------------------- See: »www.adeepbite.com/hidemyass-vpn-···ent-6395
Private Internet Access: no logs, shared IP addresses. Sometime the upload speed is slow, but 90% of the time private internet access is fast. very limited number of servers.
Some of the IP addresses of hidemyass and private internet access are "blocked" by Google.
smartydns is good, but expensive. |

I was using Ipredator.se till earlier this year and went to private internet access. ipredator.se ran about $100/yr after exchange rates, and Private internet access was only $40.
For windows 7 Viscosity was a good purchase as well $10 for the software |

I am using IPVanish because they use shared IP addresses, this makes it impossible for them to trace, the speeds have been excellent and the price is redoculous cheap. I've been keeping ahead of the scifi channel in my continuum episodes with a little skip and a hop to Canada |

| Ipredator (or it's creators) recommended it for their OpenVPN support. if anyone has say the config file for OpenVPN you can simply download the file and import it into viscosity and it makes the connection for you automatically. All you need to do is username/password and that's it. The rest is in the config file.
I like it myself. The Ipredator site explains a bit more in detail on their instructions on setting up a connection why they like viscosity. -- If you have a topic in the direct forum please reply to it or a post of mine, I get a notification when you do this. I have my dsl split to 2 tomato routers - one is ways alonline with my vpn, and the other, has the settings in it but I only turn it on when needed. Essentially, if you want to stream hulu, etc, then one connects wirelessly to my always on vpn, and if I'm torrenting, I manually turn it on in my router settings overnight and turn it off in the am. |
