Browser connecting to Verizon

Only recently I believe I have begun noticing that whenever I visit certain sites I see my browser connected to several different IP addresses, all of which are Verizon Business.

For example :

firefox.exe 4464 TCP my-pc 55135 63.116.244.171 http ESTABLISHED 4 1,297 22 28,857

firefox.exe 4464 TCP my-pc 55183 63.116.244.163 http ESTABLISHED 1 355 3 3,448

firefox.exe 4464 TCP my-pc 55165 63.116.244.168 http ESTABLISHED 3 1,067 11 15,151

firefox.exe 3528 TCP my-pc 56084 63.116.244.177 http ESTABLISHED
firefox.exe 3528 TCP my-pc 56162 63.116.244.80 http ESTABLISHED 1 593 30 43,366

firefox.exe 3528 TCP my-pc 56291 63.116.244.88 http ESTABLISHED 1 352 3 2,922

I realize these sites may contain additional content from other Ip addresses which perhaps could be hosted on Verizon Business.
, yet I have even attempted to find out the IP addresses these sites resolve to and none seem to list anything relating to these IP addresses.

Is something like this common and nothing to be worried about?
I regularly scan my computer and have found no viruses.

I do have a router allowing me to share the Internet connection with another computer in the other room, the router lists my Internet IP and two Static DNS IP addresses as Verizon Business. But none with a 63.116 prefix.

The thing that concerns me is this -

For a long time now my Verizon DSL Internet connection gets reset at around the exact same time each night at 10:15 pm EST.

I will briefly get disconnected and reconnected. The Modem log always shows a "PADT" received which as I understand it is coming from Verizon.

Perhaps my modem may even lose sync for some reason, but I find it odd that if this were the reason why it it happens at the exact same time each night. So I generally assume it is something disconnecting me on Verizon's side for some reason. I have no timer switches or anything running in the house that may also account for such a thing.

What is odd that I have attempted to block the subnets relating to these IP addresses in my Windows Firewall and the sites don't load.
However sometimes after the 10:15 pm reset they then will suddenly load just fine. But I can see that I am still not connected to any IP with the 63.116 prefix because as I mentioned, I blocked the subnets in my firewall.

If anyone has any ideas about what is going on I would appreciate it.

Those IP addresses belong to Akamai. They are a content distribution network who tends to have servers hosted directly off of an ISP's network. They do this to help cut down on latency and other congestion-prone areas.

»whois.arin.net/rest/net/ ··· -0-1/pft
»www.akamai.com/

Now as to why the sites load up fine when those subnets are blocked after a specific time, it's possible the load for the site is being shifted to other servers. Akamai isn't cheap by any means to use on a massive scale, so they are likely rolling off the CDN to another provider, or to their own servers at night when traffic is less. The same deal happens with providers such as Yahoo! or YouTube for their streaming video in some cases.

Ok thank you for the clarification. I assumed it may be Akamai or related to some content provider, however my whois search simply returned Verizon Business. So therefore hopefully it most likely isnt something bad on my machine hijacking my browser.

If anyone may also have a guess as to why I keep getting a PADT received in my Verizon Westell Modem log as it resets each night at 10:15 pm EST I would appreciate it.

While we know you have a Westell DSL modem, what is the model of it? For example I have the Westell-F90-610015-06.

It's a Westell model 6100 modem from Verizon.
Unfortunately I have been unable to find any firmware update for it.

I run the modem in bridge mode through a Linksys Cable/DSL router with 4 port switch, model BEFSR41 to share the connection with another computer in the home.

I could perhaps post some modem stats if it may help. As mentioned I don't know if the modem loses sync. But the reset happens at or around the same time 10:15 EST each night with the log always displaying that a PADT was received.

Considering that you are getting PADTs in the Westell, you got that backward.

I point to »Verizon DSL FAQ »How do I use a router with the Westell 6100? to what you are saying and I point to »Verizon FiOS FAQ »Can I use my wireless or an extra router along with the Verizon provided router? for what you meant you have done (but not for FIOS - for DSL).

#1 As noted in »Verizon DSL FAQ »How do I use a router with the Westell 6100? they talk about

a) the White and Blue and

b) the Red and Black Firmware.

#2 Which firmware is it?

Thank you for these links.

The firmware is the red and black one.

Again, my configuration is that the Westell is set to bridge mode and my router in PPPOE mode with DHCP server enabled and the start IP address is 192.168.2.100

»Verizon DSL FAQ »How do I use a router with the Westell 6100?
The directions here also seem to describe placing the Westell in bridge mode, so isn't my setup therefore correct?

In looking at the second link -
»Verizon FiOS FAQ »Can I use my wireless or an extra router along with the Verizon provided router?
If I understand it correctly, basically it is describing to enable DHCP in the modem serving an IP range 192.168.1.11 to 192.168.1.254
but disable DHCP in the router and set that to 192.168.1.2.

Could you please elaborate on what you mean when you say I have it "backward". Again, thank you for any help.

#1 Since you are on the Red and Black firmware:

To get the Transceiver Statistics, this is at System Monitoring > Advanced Monitors > Transceiver Statistics.

#2 It does not make sense to me how you are getting the PADTs in the Westell if it the Westell is not setup to handle the public IP.

Anyways..

#1 I thought the RJ-45 WAN port of the RJ-45 WAN port router is not connected to anything else.

#2 This other thread/post is an overview of how to access a modem combo while it is not setup/configured to handle the public IP what I knew when I was posting it.

»Re: Access to modem combo while in bridge mode

I also learned the info in »Re: Access to modem combo while in bridge mode

Here is my Modems Transceiver Stats and again I can confirm it is currently in bridge mode -

Transceiver Revision: 7.2.3.0
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Interleaved

Transceiver Information Downstream Path Upstream Path

Line Attenuation (dB) 17.0 / 11.0
Transmit Power (dBm) 8.7 / 4.6

-----------
The most recent logs however do not list a PADT received, just DSL is up then DSL is down.

5,10:55:31 US Atten: 11.0 DS Atten: 17.0

4,11:3:18 WanMgr reports DSL is UP

4,11:2:46 WanMgr reports DSL is Down

---------------

However here is an archived version of the same log indicating the PADT received as I said which was a regular occurrence.

SAT JUN 02 22:17:01 2012

------------------

One odd thing in the modem control panel - is that if I go under Traffic Monitoring - which displays a table - and then click on the link Ethernet - it displays a check box enabled for both
Private LAN DHCP Server Enable and Private LAN Enable

with Modem IP Address 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
DHCP Start Address 192.168.1.15
DHCP End Address 192.168.1.47
DHCP Lease Time 1: 0 : 0 : 0

However If I then also go under Full Status/System wide Monitoring of Connections / IP Address Distribution - DHCP Server

Private LAN DHCP Server Enable does NOT have a check box enabling it

but Private LAN Enable still DOES have a check box enabling it

Modem IP Address 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

So perhaps I have some sort of conflict here as I do in fact have
Local DHCP Server: enabled in my router
with DHCP Address Range: 192.168.2.100 to 192.168.2.102
and a lease time of one day

----------------

Is the correct setup therefore essentially as followed?

1.) Modem in bridge mode with LAN DHCP Server disabled
at 192.168.1.1

2.) Router in PPPOE mode with DHCP server enabled at 192.168.2.1
with my DHCP Address Range: 192.168.2.100 to 192.168.2.102

Would this basically be the correct setup ?

Again, thank you for any help.

#1 By the looks of things, you received a PADT from Verizon.

#2 In the Westell go to My Network -> Network Connections -> Broadband Connection (DSL)

#3 Does your screen look like the sample screen shot that is provided at »Verizon DSL FAQ »How do I use a router with the Westell 6100? just above the text that says
quote:
PPPoE customers will see this screen. If you use a DHCP type Internet connection the screen will be different, you will have a "release" button in the top section - use it now to release your public IP. Then, locate the VCs section, locate the line " Enabled, VPI 0, and VCI 35 ..." and click the notepad icon under Edit on the right to get to the VC 1 Configuration screen.

OR does your screen look more like mine?

It looks exactly like your screen. Which I believe is indicating the modem is as I said currently in bridge mode.

In my modem, should I uncheck/disable "Private LAN DHCP Server Enable" ?
but enable DHCP only server in my router?

#1 In my modem combo I went to Advanced -> Yes to the alert -> Private LAN

a) Private LAN DHCP Server Enable, is set to unchecked.

b) Private LAN Enable, is set to checked.

#2 In my RJ-45 WAN port router, I have a DHCP Server enabled just to make things easier.

#3 I believe one the consequence of not having the DHCP Server in the modem combo turned off is, for any other type of connection other than pure DHCP: If the connection to the net goes down, it will take longer for that connection to go back up then compared to turning the DHCP Server in the modem combo off.

#4 Notes:

a) If pure DHCP: Your modem combo was setup to Bridge-Routed-Bridge-DHCP Enabled, before you changed the modem combo not to handle the public IP.

b) Other than pure DHCP when talking about Verzion equals, PPPoE-DHCP OR Pure Static.
