Getting Cable Channels without Paying for it

I have Northland Cable its discussed here sometimes, well anyway I had a new drop ran today and I just have internet service with them and nothing else, before I hooked it to my modem(I ask them to let me do my own work) I hooked it to my TV and I get about 15 cable channels. and 4 Digital Cable channels(I thought you have to have a cable box for that?) and WOW those channels look better than my 1080p DISH network satellite channels. I get BET,CBS,ABC,HallMark, and 1 HBO Channel, and for the digital cable 4 sports channels Including ESPN, golf, Hunting, and something else.

Any idea why or how I`d be getting these channels?

The tech probably forgot (or didn't care) to put the trap on the line to keep you from getting them.

Most providers no longer use traps, as they are moving towards full encryption requiring addressable equipment on the customer side. I would imagine they see it as an acceptable loss now and it will soon disappear. They could even look at it is a value add to encourage TV subscriptions.
