Had a brief period about an hour ago resulting in "504 Timeout" error page. Hasn't happened again yet.

Not a bug or glitch - just a request...

For those of us that are interested in this sort of stuff; how about a lowdown on the hardware and software the site's now on?

Maybe even compared to what it was coming from?

You know, cause Justin probably has nothing better to do right now...

Attempting to send mail via mail.dslr.net port 26 results in a connection refused (10061) error. Port 25 times out. Port 587 gives an error on my client.

Did you remember to do a POP fetch before trying to send?

Well sending mail has worked fine for 10+ years. Trying to figure out how to get it to work again.

A thought: Might be worthwhile to post on the old site link how to clear history and cache so people can get to the new site.

Nice work - the site seems ok to me so far..

Curious how you managed to transfer the amount of data you were working with so quickly (~1TB database IIRC from the previous thread..) - a "seed copy" of a fresh backup that was in place, then incremental of some sort? Good deal all around in any case, and it's pretty interesting to read about the specs of the newer setup.

Interesting side-note - I'd started a smoke-ping before the transfer, and it seems to be working well (see attached image)

Thanks for all you do, Justin. Great site. Been coming here for years prior to registering (probably late '99, or early '00), and it's very cool that the community here is also still so great.

RSS

Have not received any RSS updates today.
Specifically the front page feed at:

The last update was yesterday and I know Karl has made updates to the DSLR Frontpage since then.

Congratulations on a successful migration. I hope you enjoy working with the new hardware - I certainly would! Thank you very much for spending the time to keep things running smoothly.

You mean if you use https?

If so it's working for me. I use the https site and it's at 64.91.255.98

Yep. I had to restart my browser (FF 22.0) this morning to get to the new site.

I woke up not having received any alarms and touch wood the infrastructure looks solid so far, obviously I'm going to fix up the most troublesome omissions / disabled things first so I apologise if something bothers you guys and you think it is lingering without hearing anything.

Yeah to transfer a lot of data was a PITA without waiting for a day - basically it was eventually incremental rsyncs, and a lot of scripts for the mysql part to bring an older copy of the database forward to the shut off time.

One thing that seems to have broken again is the RSS feeds:

»RSS feeds not being fetched/updating?

nil See Profile fixed this the other day (as I confirm in my last post in that thread), but possibly it was on the "old" servers and not the new? Purely speculative on my part of course.

For example the Slashdot RSS hasn't been updated in 14 hours, but in actuality just got updated 50 minutes ago:

»rss.slashdot.org/Slashdo ··· slashdot

yes because currently all the cron type jobs that do things (like fetch RSS feeds etc) are not enabled as I have to check each one before they are allowed to run.

By the end of today that'll be setup. Right now I'm working on getting the incremental forum search going.

I didn't try to send mail last night from dslr.net. I just got on the computer today and tried (using Thunderbird) after reading your post.

How in the heck did my IP address get on a SPAM BLOCK??? Is this popup message to be believed? I think dslr's mail server is rather confused to put it mildly.

Your IP is in the PBL therefore you need to connect with authentication to send email. Whether or not that works I haven't checked yet.

While playing with email settings I got the same message as Mele20 See Profile but I'm not on Time Warner nor was I trying to send to a Time Warner recipient.

mail sending needs authentication, whether it is pop before smtp or proper authentication. One or both might be unavailable at the moment.

I've tried that so I suspect it's not working
