50Mbps Service - How does it work?

I live in Rio Rancho, New Mexico and our local cable operator is Cable One. I am subscribed to their 50Mbps service, and it's phenomenal.

How does a service like this work? Is this essentially a "fiber" connection with clients just coax'd into it? I know where my local set of equipment is, I can take pictures if it helps.

Thank you everyone.

Hybrid fibre-coaxial

the 500 to 2000 homes is incorrect

more like 20-50 homes other wise there would be no bandwidth for internet

Actually you are incorrect. If the system is on DOCSIS 3.0 500+ homes passed on a single node is not a problem to get those speeds. Now, if every single home has internet service you may see some speed issues if the plant isn't tight. To my knowledge there is no HFC system that has 20 to 50 homes anywhere. I used to work for a major cable company in the NY/NJ area and we were 500+ homes passed per node on most nodes and still getting high speeds for most customers.
