It happened again. I checked the Network tab and the Response was correct. Then I did View Source on the page, and it matched the Response.
The browser seems to be receiving correct data from the server, but not displaying it. I have never seen this before. I already disabled all my extensions except for Flash and Adobe Reader just to make sure they weren't causing the problem.
If it's only affecting me, just ignore it. |
|
justin..needs sleepAustralian join:1999-05-28 New York, NY kudos:15 | Do you mean you pressed F5 and are pretty sure the server was contacted, and pretty sure the server returned to the browser the updated page, but in the tab nothing changed, however in (say) another browser (or in another tab?), you'd see a fresher page? |

I found the reason: »bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46845
It is a firefox bug, if you input some stuff into a form and press reload, the form contents is preserved by firefox. This is not expected behaviour, and unfortunately it trips up the simplest way to detect that someone has pressed BACK and got a cached page, rather than loading a fresh page from the server.
Therefore I'll have to find a work around for firefox.
Amazingly the bug has a huge history and apparently still the firefox group wants to be out of step with other browsers. In no other browser can you input text and find it preserved (not the default values reinstated) when you press RELOAD to get a new page! |

said by justin:said by Mango:I now need to press CTRL+F5 to see an updated list of topics. Using Firefox 23.0.1 on Windows 7. Pressing F5 or clicking the reload button makes the little icon spin for a second or so but otherwise does nothing.
Not a significant/urgent issue, obviously.
Irregardless of the automatically updating forums I did try F5 (not control F5) on Firefox 23.0.1, with the Network tab open and observed that it functions as you'd expect, it contacts the server, waits and receives the new page. The behaviour to which I am accustomed is that I usually backspace after reading a thread, and as such have always EXPECTED to have to refresh the forum front page (in IE8), and I do so using either [F5] or the browser button bar icon.
This suits me fine.
But are we saying that refresh of forum front pages are sometimes now automatic ?

So you don't lose any of what you painstakingly just typed into a form ?
Fascinating !
If true, now THAT might just be a strong enough reason for me to stop using IE !
So which FF versions support this feature ? |
|
justin..needs sleepAustralian join:1999-05-28 New York, NY kudos:15 | apparently all of them. I think it sucks and so do many of the Firefox devs that have commentated on the bug over many years: reload is reload: if you reload you expect as a user to get a clean form with site defaults and reset hidden fields, not old data. "Losing" data after pressing the little circular arrow is expected behavior. |
|
DavesnothereNo-BHELL-ity DOES have its AdvantagesPremium join:2009-06-15 START Today! kudos:6 | And I just demonstrated it to myself today during a test of FF 14.
I WAS being a bit tongue-in-cheek there, last post, yet still there ARE times when I would be VERY glad, after something had upset my browser, if it would let me have back what I was typing.
Possibly a configurable setting in SOME browser's next revision would be a welcome addition, to let the user mimic either FireFox's or traditional behaviour in this functionality.
It seems that in the FireFox dev team, you may well have encountered someone rivaling your hesitance to yield to certain suggestions here and there. |
|
justin..needs sleepAustralian join:1999-05-28 New York, NY kudos:15 | I just read the comments attached to the bug and I agree with the many that say it breaks the web. generally Firefox tries to be in step with all other browsers so it seems that it didn't get addressed more because of a failing of the bug reporting system than because it was a key differentiating feature. |

Two Firefox add-ons I've found useful over the years for various "problem" situations: Textarea Cache (which I currently use) and Lazarus (which I don't). They both help you "get back what you've lost" (and there may even be some newer extensions now which do the same thing). |

Anime and sci fi has been moved to technical, can it be moved back to Talk please |

When attaching an image to my post, after clicking upload, the image that shows in the window above the posting area, is not the image I uploaded--it is instead the image of the initial (first) post. Although the actual post is correct, this is confusing during the posting process. (I first thought I had selected/posted the wrong image until I finally figured out what was going on...) -- amicitia sine fraude (friendship without deceit) |
|
justin..needs sleepAustralian join:1999-05-28 New York, NY kudos:15 | I can't say I've seen this, unless a previous attempt to upload was not posted. For example you upload Picture A, but cancel or BACK your way out then try again with Picture B you will see A and B (and post A and B).
Sounds like your problem is much more fundamental and must be related to the browser / setup you're on. Which is? |

justin..needs sleepAustralian join:1999-05-28 New York, NY kudos:15 | Difference in terms of the number of people (tiny) that explore forums via the category they are in. Of course some people have visceral reactions to the addition of a full stop, yes.
I'd like to have the "all topics are ok" forums in their own category which is based around the word "Talk", "Lounge" etc., that's my preference. Whether or not the category for "forums on a particular subject" need the emphasis on tech, or there should be a second category like "special interest" is something I haven't got to yet.
You guys have to get used to the incremental nature of change here, even in large projects a complete revamp isn't rolled out without adjustments later needed. But here, with far fewer people pecking away, different things move forward not always lock-step in consistency. |

Browser IE9. Procedure as follows: Typed in reply > clicked attachments > selected (browse) the image ("picture A") > clicked upload > clicked preview. The previewed image was not what I selected and uploaded--the previewed image was the images in the OP initial post. However, the image I selected was actually uploaded and attached to my post--it just didn't show in the preview window. Re: Something changed, and if it isn't a bug, I don't/do like it I wasn't actually exploring--just looking at the breadcrumbs; some things you see, and they make you think "That's just wrong." And on the subject of "special interest", given that you now allow people to start topics in the Anime/Sci-Fi forum about things having no relevance whatsoever to anime, sci-fi, or fantasy (which is to say, any show or movie or book or whatever at all), the forum in question is becoming less and less "special" with every passing day.

Is there a list/table of these characters anywhere for me to examine ? |
