KVM over IP recommendation?

Sorta OT

But I had to de-virtualize a VOIP server, it was giving me trouble in virtualization, so now its on dedicated hardware. But I hate not having console access to it.
Anyone recommend an affordable one port KVM over IP device?

I don't know what your definition of "affordable" is, but I use ADDER IP KVMs. They use VNC to view them.

I use the ipeps DA if I need simultaneous local console.

I don't recall what we paid for either model (we have both), but ISTR it was ~$600 - $700.

www.froogle.com can give you a range of prices, but don't text and drive. Lowest I see on froogle is $381.

Might check startech too. I used to buy standard KVM stuff from them for decent pricing.

Curious how well the client works. Most of the browser based ones I tried needed either activex or java and I hate both with a passion.

With the ADDER, all that is needed is VNCviewer which is something I already have and use for other hosts. I can carry it around on a USB stick and it doesn't need to be installed.

Besides the very obvious, what cant be done on the VoIP server over an SSH session for example?

If all you're doing is banging out commands on the CLI, SSH is probably going to be a lot more responsive than a video stream of the desktop.

Assuming its *nix based and not Windows based of course.

Yea normal operations are web or ssh based.
Its when its down or unresponsive I like to see the console for errors. its more of a peace of mind thing. I like peace of mind things

So another suggestion, is if it doesnt boot in to a graphical interface, you could redirect console output to a serial port (relatively easy to configure on a *nix box), and use some sort of serial to ethernet adaptor to access the console.

I am shocked at the high prices for KVMoIP devices.

a) We use IP-enabled power bar and serial console to reboot/access overseas servers.

b) Newer Intel hardware has built-in remote access features which can access bios and drive even during blue screen. I know some Linux guys who use that feature but have never tried it myself.

I too have have good experiences with the Latronix Spider. Get the separate power supply, as well for times where you are USB limited, such as wanting other usb devices attached as well.
