Lumia 1020 AT&T Only?

I want to buy a Nokia Lumia 1020 when it comes out next week. I read it's an AT&T Exclusive only phone.

If I buy the phone at full price, would AT&T unlock it so I can take it to another carrier? T-Mobile is a lot cheaper if you bring your own phone.

Also I'm with Verizon. Friend said Verizon's network is different from everyone else. So if I have a phone that works on Verizon, even if I unlock it, it won't work on any other major carrier? I'm using a Droid Razr right now (first edition model, not the MAXX version). I'd like to get it unlocked after my contract is up and then sell it on craigslist for a little more money but don't know if Verizon phones are exclusive to Verizon only.

yes you can get the lumia 1020 unlocked, however you cannot get it from AT&T dirrectly as they have different network frequency supports than other countires internationally, therefore "technicaly" getting it from either of these two suppliers should allow you to use phone all over the world as long as if the carrier you are using supports the frequency of the phone.

»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No ··· mia_1020
Info regarding supported frequency here.
2.5G GSM/GPRS/EDGE – 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz
3G UMTS/DC-HSPA+ – 850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz
4G LTE Rel. 8 (UE Cat 3) – 700, 800, 900, 1800, 2100, 2600 MHz

Compare these frequency's or ask your carrier "if" they support them. generally they should tell you exactly what they are capable to support: E.g »www.vodafone.co.nz/netwo ··· /#marine ( states they support 3G on the 900MHz frequency band - used for rural and marine areas, or 3G on the 2100MHz frequency band.) therefore this carrier would work on this phone, as the phones frequency is supported by the carrier.

Hope this is of some help.

I'm in the U.S.

I'm reading online that you can buy the Lumia 1020 direct from AT&T right now... but they won't unlock it for six months even if you bought the phone without a contract. I guess it was that way when the Lumia 920 came out.

Is this true? Has anyone bought a 1020 and change carriers yet?

Nice phone but way to much for a phone you will have to wait to unlock.

The Lumia 1020 is $299.99 with a two year contract or $659.99 with no contract. It is locked to AT&T and will be as long as it is an exclusive in the US.

Nokia made a bad decision with going with 1 carrier for this release.

I have the 822 with Verizon and love it, would love to have a better camera but the one on the 822 provides fantastic photo's and video's.

unless you unlock it and use it with Tmobile's $30 plan....saving money in the long run...

that's the beauty of GSM..

unlock codes for this shouldn't take long...I remember the old nokias where you can unlock them with simple unlocking calculators...

Lumia 920 was an exclusive as well. It was 6 months before the arrival of the 925 and 928 for other carriers. During the 6 months, it was not easy to get the 920 unlocked. Once the 6 months was over however, 3rd-party sites were selling unlock codes for under $10US.

I called ATT (and I'm not a customer) and they unlocked it for me. I'm now using it on T-Mobile, but still playing with the APN settings.

So you bought the phone through AT&T for $659.99 and then had AT&T unlock it and used it on t-mobile?

As long as the phone is unlocked, the phone will work on T-Mobile's network. Both carriers (AT&T and T-Mobile) pretty much uses the same frequency.

AT&T:
GSM/UMTS - 850/1900 MHz
LTE - 700 MHz(band 17)/AWS(1700/2100 MHz)

T-Mobile:
GSM - 850/1900 MHz
UTMS - 850/AWS/1900 MHz
LTE - AWS(1700/2100 MHz)

I read somewhere online that on some phones from AT&T you won't get 4G speeds if used on T-Mobile. Not sure if this is true though.

correct...depending on the phone, it might not have the correct frequency or it needs tweaking...

You may need to add T-Mobile's APN settings on the phone in order to work with T-Mobile's 4G network. But hardware wise, as long as the phone supports the right frequencies on T-Mobile, it will work.
