 | [modem/router] Fairpoint settings for modem router My friend in Greenfield NH just started with FairPoint and would like to use his Netgear N300 Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router DGN2200v3. The installation genie doesn't work nor does the detect internet settings. The dsl light is solid green but the internet light is red (there was a brief period of green but it went to red when we opened a browser.) Can anyone help.
We've used the following basic settings in internet page of the router.
Yes to login ISP = PPPoE
user name and password from Fairpoint entered service name left blank connection mode: always on
Internet IP address = get automatically from ISP
Domain name server address = get automatically from ISP
NAT enabled
Computer MAC address = get automatically from ISP
thank you. |

| Welcome to BBR.
Do you know if FairPoint has successfully activated the account? Was your friend able to get connected with FairPoint router? If so at least your know the connection is up and running.
Their may a walled garden feature that requires special incantations on the FairPoint supplied modem to initialize the connection. I don't know FairPoint current practice.
Check the ATM VPI/VCI settings in the router. FairPoint uses 0:35. According to the manual that is the default setting.
Are you sure you didn't mistype this entry "Computer MAC address = get automatically from ISP" Assuming you posted entries in order the last one is: "Router MAC address" leave it at "use default." This features lets you change the hardware MAC address of the interface presented to FairPoint. There is no need to change it.

FairPoint uses standards based ADSL so should be able to use non-FairPoint router. I used a Netopia 3346 for many years.

Earlier versions of the DGN2200 (pre Installation Genie) work extremely well with FPoint dsl. No reason why v3 shouldn't work. If this is not a new modem/router that has been installed previously somewhere I would suggest setting it back to factory default before setting it up w/FPoint settings.
The following is the setup from a DGN2200 "Smart Wizard" Router Manager
encapsulation: PPPoE over ethernet
login: FPoint email address
password: (While FPoint won't assist you in setting up this modem, they will issue you a new password which should solve any walled garden issues.)
Conn mode: always on
IP & DNS should get automatically from ISP
Modem MAC address: Use default address
VPI: 0 VCI: 30 DSL Mode: Auto
That should be all you need to get you started... |

Forgot to mention - if this is a new modem you might want to look at the Netgear Forum for info. Netgear is famous for issuing buggy firmware/upgrades. You may have to flash the latest incarnation...
