had package stolen shipped with UPS

Yesterday I was having such a bad day after having my package stolen.

Here is what happened. I get home about 5 PM tracking number shows delivered FRONT DOOR , the driver that handles my packages never even rings the bell always leaves the package front door since I live in apartament building but 2 months ago there was different driver who was awesome always made sure you get your package. And also I had another package shipped via USPS and well that package was in the stairway.. so at least that one didn't get stolen.

However amazon was awesome within few hours they prepared a replacement shipment with Saturday delivery.

Anyways I never signed the package so this is the only reason they gave me a replacement.

Did anyone had a similar situation before? I shop online a lot and this was the first time ever something like that happened to me.

Should this driver be fired? or they won't even care what you guys think?

I think big companies like Amazon factor this sort of thing into their prices - a certain percentage of loss. My mom had a few packages stolen before the holidays one year - thieves hit the whole neighborhood after UPS went through delivering everyone's packages to the front door with no signatures. Opened all the packages, grabbed the stuff, tossed the empty boxes in the woods.

We called Amazon to see if they could just re-ship those packages and charge my mom's card without her having to go through and reorder everything again one item at a time. And they just said "we'll replace them for free, don't worry about it." They were really great, my mom was so upset that she had been robbed - especially rough when it's all the holiday presents you bought for your family - and they made it a lot easier to deal with.

Yep amazon is great big plus for them in my book.

I wonder what would newegg do if that happened I mostly shop with them.
Probobaly they would tell me to wait 1-2 weeks but I would file a chargeback anyways.

Why in the world would you even suggest the driver get fired ? UPS clearly allows their drivers to leave packages without a signature, so he/she did nothing wrong. Plus, if the shipper was really concerned about this, they would make the shipment a "Signature req'd" one (but that costs more) and leads to unhappy customers who have to a) go to the UPS center to get their package or b) have to wait at home for the driver.

You "never signed the package"? Does that mean a signature was required, but the driver left the package without getting one?

Happened to me in reverse. I *sent* a package which disappeared at delivery. But the UPS guys have GPS built in to those signature tablets they carry with them, and they realized the package had been delivered next door by mistake. They rang the doorbell there a week later and said, we'd like the package back that was mistakenly left on your porch, and it was given to them and the delivery was completed. Apparently this does happen not infrequently.

I am pretty sure if you had expensive package being shipped to you and it was left just like that you wouldn't be to happy. I got lucky because amazon replaced it no issues , if they didn't then would you be so happy?

anyways I was mad and that's all

just 2 months ago there was a different driver he would always make sure every package gets signed that driver never left it without a signature which was a huge plus.
I would rather wait whole day for the package and have it then have it quicker but being without a signature.

I don't know what company policy is, but good delivery drivers will not leave things in unsafe places. My front door is obviously (to anyone with a brain) not a safe place to leave a package unattended, and my UPS driver and Fedex driver don't leave things whether or not it has the "signature required" check mark.

My normal delivery driver will knock on my door if he thinks I am home, but if the windows and doors are shut, he just drops the package off, which is perfectly fine. With FedEx, they told me if I never want to sign for a package again(besides 21+ signature required), just to leave a note on the door with my signature and authorization, and they will note it on the account. Best thing I have done, because Verizon Wireless required my signature 2x times on a Friday, and I had to wait until Monday to get it. Not anymore

We had a local investigation of the local UPS distribution center responding to a shipper (Apple) finding abnormally high number of "dropped off" missing shipments. UPS and law enforcement identified a driver who was selling the stuff online (Craigslist/EBay) and he was being prosecuted the last I heard. Local missing shipments dropped off once the other drivers saw they could also be canned for pulling this crap.

Define "unsafe places"

Obviously it's a judgment call. The OP says he had a different driver two months ago who who would make sure he got the package (presumably this means handing it to him in person or putting it in a safer place). So the new driver's judgment is different (and apparently worse, since the package got stolen) than the old one.

In my case, I live in a sketchy urban neighborhood and my front steps are right at the sidewalk with no front lawn or gate or fence, so anyone walking by can see that there is an unguarded package at my door and grab it in about two seconds. I'd call that an "unsafe place" to leave a package, wouldn't you?

Get it with a signature, and you should never have a problem

Everything I order gets delivered to the office now, because I can't miss work to stay home and sign for every item I order online. But sometimes people will send gifts or surprises to me at home and then I don't have control over how it gets shipped.

A bit off topic, but I mailed three cards with checks in them through the post office inside mail slot. It is an open building filled with post office boxes and the slot is for both envelopes and small flat parcels that drop into a cart which is inside the confines of the post office.

One card arrived; two did not.

A week later I received a letter from a fellow in Long Beach, CA he found a check in the street that I had mailed along with one of the cards. He sent it back. He found the check in the street on Crenshaw blvd near Inglewood, CA.

I notified the Post Office about the lost/stolen cards and they eventually called me. The postmaster of the local PO said that in my area - around Pasadena, CA - that during the last couple of years there have been theft of mail from drop-off boxes. Apparently they use stick or string with a sticky adhesive and pull the mail out and take cash, checks, or gift cards.

The postmaster told me there is nothing they can do about the stolen items I sent, and I understand that. What was told to me next was pretty astounding. The postmaster told me that they cannot guarantee any mail delivery unless it is handed to a post office employee - either to your postman or over the counter.

There is a 5-year mandatory jail term for stealing U.S. mail.

I have sent the following information to my congressman and my senators.

I am waiting for a reply - which I anticipate will never come.

You're welcome anyways not being sarcastic now , had my package reshipped via fedex and is all good got it today.

Oh and it's not like I can request signature confirmation on Amazon. Old driver would always make sure package gets signed.

One way you can make sure that signatures become required for your address is to file a claim that UPS has to pay as a result of a "lost" package !

In all seriousness, and I was told this by a UPS driver (granted, that doesn't make it official), but the "rule" is the driver can make his/her own judgement call in regards to leaving packages without a signature "based on your neighborhood".

So if I understand it right I could try to call them and somehow add my address to "always signature required list" if that is so that is actually a good idea.

I mostly shop with Newegg and this is first time it happened so I might try something like that. Thanks!

No, you'd have to have something shipped to your address, they leave it w/o getting a signature, and the shipper files a claim against UPS (unlike how Amazon deals with it). Without a signature, UPS has NO defense and pays up.... Then they'll flag your address as always requiring a signature no matter what. At least that's what many others have indicated has happened to them.

Crime situation is ridiculous, law enforcement also found a few crooks (ex-cons) were following the UPS and FedEx trucks on routes and taking packages just dropped off, easy pickings in most cases.

Sarah, you may want to look in to UPS' My Choice program. My situation is similar to yours. The free part of the program will notify you as soon as a shipping label is created with your address on it, so you can preemptively have those surprise packages held at will-call, or for a small fee you can have them redirected to your office.

I've had UPS dump packages on the front porch of the office and just leave. Our slips all said signature required even if the office was a house only used as office. Those drivers got reprimanded as my boss would raise hell with UPS.

The worst one was the driver that FORGED my boss's sig and left the package on the front porch early in the AM. Didn't he think someone would look at the signature? That driver got fired.

Is your apartment gated? out Policy with UPS is not to leave packages at apartments and more so if the package is out in the open.. If it's gated more likely then not we will leave the package.

it has 2 doors , 1st door is a door anyone can open 2nd one you need a key so he left between them 2 basically in the middle someone must have seen package and decided to take it , if it was behind the 2nd door which he could do but rining any bell and someone would let him in package would be safe.
