Future of 300 Mbps over single pair for FUSION?

In light of today's front page news on this site, regarding Ikanos announcement they've made another advancement in VDSL technology, delivering speeds of 300 Mbps for 200 meters over a single copper pair, what are the any technical obstacles, if any, to Sonic's FUSION service providing the same?

Well, 200 meters is just 656 feet. You're not going to get many customers that close to a CO, which is what copper-based Fusion requires.

The article mentioned their fiber to the distribution point system, meaning something similar to AT&T U-Verse system where you take fiber to a distribution point, then copper out from there. Since VRADs are usually closer to customers than CO's are, this technology would best be suited for AT&T's system.

On the other hand, Sonic has chosen not to deploy RT's (similar to VRADs) so this probably wouldn't help them all that much. To get more speed to more customers, Sonic has chosen to deploy fiber to the premise when it's economical to do so. Since they're a small company, it will take time and money to implement FTTP.

This is the top performance in a lab setting. Scale down your expectations for real world copper wiring.
