Just to show the lurkers what can be done when you play around with effects that are available in various editing programs, my image above started out like this:
and I just kept layering on various effects - starfield, grunge, texture, vignette, etc. - with the only tweak being an adjustment of the opacity slider as I applied each effect to my taste. As I progressed along, I started to get a Rembrandt-y vibe from the way the image was going so I kept building on that. The effect is even more pronounced when the image is smaller.
This was done using Pixlr Express which is a free Android app.
