[AZ] Issues with my SB5101 Modem

Hello,
I have been having issues with my Motorola SB5101 modem in which the modem will freeze and then reboot itself. Cox tech says everything is fine and I am wondering if I should just purchase a new modem. I have the modem connected to a Cisco WRT54G router. It seems to only do it if I am running games and also video. My download and upload speeds are good. Here is what my modem says. This seems to have just started within the last several weeks.

Downstream Value
Frequency 843000000 Hz

I had a similar issue with my 5101 when I saturated the connection, and when the tech came out her 2.0 modem did the same thing. I upgraded to a 3.0 modem and everything was fine. Seems like the 2.0 modem wasn't changing channels properly for load balancing.

Might be time to upgrade your equipment.. The 5101 modem and WRT54G router are ancient dinosaurs..

So is it better to get 2 separate units or get an all in one unit. I was looking either at the Motorola SBG6580 or the Netgear CG3000D all in one units. Seems to me that to by 2 separate units that are good quality cost more than a all in one unit.

separate modem and router is always better, they tend to have better performance and easier to trouble shoot if you have problems in the future as you can bypass the router if need be. if you do end up going with a gateway stick with the Motorola like the 6580 or then new one that just came out but not yet supported by cox the 6782 wireless AC gateway but im sure it will be on their list soon

I totally agree about going separate modem and router. Its easier for troubleshooting, you can update the router firmware, and your LAN doesn't go down if you need to reset your modem. I personally think Wifi AC is still a bit overkill for most house hold, especially if most of your equipment is G. As for what kind of modem and router, what are your requirements and price point?

I don't need anything special just a good overall package. I have the premier internet so I want a DOCSIS 3.0 modem capable of handling that speed. As for Wifi same goes I don't have a big house just single story brick house and I use my work laptop and tablet and smartphone in my house.

For the modem, I would say a SB6141 or SB6180, which ever is cheaper in your area. For the router, it depends on your price range.

Here are a couple good ones in some different price points.

Buffalo WHR-300HP (40-50$)
Dlink DIR-655 (60-70$)
Asus RT-N56U (90-100$)
Asus RT-N66R (150$)
Netgear R6300 (200$)

My personal preference is the RT-N66U/R but I am bias. I think Wifi AC is a little overkill, and I think you would be happy with the DIR-655. Its a little long in the tooth, but stable and great 3rd party support. Try to put the router and modem some place they will stay cool and away from things that might interfere. Also try to put the router a little higher up and in the center of your house if possible.

Are all your devices Wifi G? Are any N?

Load up tomato shibby to whichever one you get, (Tomato is way better than DD-WRT - its features beat DD-WRT's paid features) and that will be a pretty solid base for your home network.

I usually go 3rd party firmware, but I have to say, after the initial problems, the firmware is decent. Stable and a ton of features most routers running stock don't have. Like dual WAN, USB 3G, VPN server, Bandwidth monitoring, Torrent downloaded, etc. Not saying you shouldn't use 3rd party if you want to (probably better overall) but if your not into that, the RT-N66U or RT-N66R (retail version) are still great routers.
