High jitter, and packetloss (user post)

Hi, Skybeam customer here. For the first year or service my experience was terrible (really high ping, packetloss, ect) until here recently (6 months ago) whenever a tech came out and put up a canopy receiver with a dish on it. It worked really well until about 3 months ago when my service returned to getting packetloss and ping problems. Skybeam has said they don't assure any quality with their service, ect ect so it's kinda up to me as to what happens with my service. Typically I get around 3-4% packetloss randomly, and jitter that ranges from 20-100 randomly (usually stays around 50 jittter, with a base of 70-80). I want to return to the service I was getting which was 0 packetloss, and a constant ping of 30-50 with little jitter. What can I do?

Maybe you need to cut down a tree or raise the SM higher. Not sure what tree growth is like in Waco.

Its actually a pretty clear line of sight. I have some very lightweight trees about 70 meters out but I don't think its affecting it.

How much trees may affect it depends on what frequency of Canopy SM you have. I had a 5.7 GHz Canopy for a while with a Stinger on it. I could still clearly see the tower but the trees started to encroach on the fresnel zone. We changed out the Stinger for a dish and that only bought me a little time. The trees grew some more and affected the signal. It worked OK through the Winter but when the trees leafed out and put on more growth this Spring, it was toast.

The wife would not let me cut the trees down so we put up a 900 MHz SM instead but the speed difference was terrible. The WISP only had a handful of subs on the 5.7 AP but hundreds of subs on the 900 AP. I gave up on Canopy and switched to DSL.

The wisp won't run any diagnostics on it? They can run what is called a link test and look at a few other variables on your SM to figure out what the issue is.

Canopy will work or it won't. Seeing that type of packet loss and jitter pretty clearly indicates an upstream issue. If Skybeam won't address those issues its pointless to look any further. Judging be their reviews you're probably stuck.

How far are you from their tower?

I would run PingPlotter to see where the packet loss is occurring. I actually had one SkyBeam CSR in the Utah call center interested in my plots.

But ultimately, to fix my problem, I left Skybeam for a new WISP. I know it doesn't help you but that was my solution.

Where are you getting your jitter numbers from? Do you have access to the RSSI and jitter stats page of the Canopy SM?
