Some Antenna Questions

Not HAM. I figured this forum would know more than Gadgets and wouldn't kick me to the curb.

Loran C Antennas. Are they good for anything?

I got a Shakespeare 5202 VHF antenna (Used, $15) that I use with my SC150 scanner at work. It works WAY better than the Rubber Duck or the CB Trunk antenna. I get local Police, Fire. Marine all the way from Chatham to Falmouth and Nantucket in South Yarmouth, MA.

Problem:
On a 45° angle into the Hotel Happy as Hell on the Beach Lobby/Lounge. I'd like to "disguise" it with a fishing rod tip and a guide or 3. Would that affect it's (minimal) use?

Reason for asking here:
My Marine Electronics Guy and the Marina Source don't get along well.

Thanks Gang!

Loran antenna? Don't have clue. The transmitting antennas are really huge.

Adding some guides and a tip to the Shakespeare should have minimal if any effect.

I doubt you will see any difference when used as a receiving antenna.

LORAN-C operated on about 100 KHz [a wavelength of 3000m]. I suppose you could use it with a preamp to try to receive European longwave broadcast stations [155-265 KHz with 9 KHz spacing] or navigational beacons [150-400 KHz].

Thanks.

I did some reading about the Loran antennas. Conclusion: useless. I thought the gang here might know of some use. I think it was stupid to dismantle the system for the relatively minor saving to the Federal Budget. (Not a tin-foil-hat) GPS Chartplotters are great but I still like charts. I still bring my GPS-48 and charts when I deliver boats.
And a pencil sharpener.

I looked at the numbers for getting some FREE parts of the Nantucket transmitting tower. Using friends and paying gas, beer and pizza, it would still cost over $300 to get a couple 6', 8', 10' bits to Cape Cod. Artsy sculptural stuff.

I didn't think my Fishing Rod/ Antenna thing would create a problem. I just wanted to hear someone else to say it.

Again, Thanks!
