Big delay for 'pop-ups' win2k / IE6

Does anyone else notice that after a few days of usage under windows 2k, any new pop-up windows (for example any advertising ones) take AGES to pop-up? this is most annoying if you visit a site that wants to pop a window for a new function or pops something up while opening the main page.. the browser will stall while painting the page and be totally unresponsive for 10 seconds or more while the new (often small) popup window is conjured.

The terrible delay seems to be much worse when there are a number of browser windows open and iconified, but I don't understand why the apparent resource exhaustion as task-manager shows memory usage of "just" 21mb for IEXPLORE.EXE and 8mb for another and 3mb for a third - with about 12-15 explorer windows being open.. nothing else much is running. One winamp, a few small secure-crts.

Task list shows

physical memory : 128mb
available : 22mb
cache: 34mb

kernel : 41mb
paged: 27mb
non paged: 14mb

For example - from this state above, a vote-thumbs-up popup jumps to 100% cpu for 15 seconds, but after it has popped up, the above memory indications have hardly budged. The pop delay is not DNS resolution as the delay is no different whether the pop is from the same site or another site.

I am not running any "assists" such as cookie-pal, popup stopper, firewalls, or anything like that.

100% CPU for 15 seconds is a HUGE amount of cpu time to waste, and it seems to be consumed entirely by two IEXPLORE.EXE processes during "the pop-up process" ... given the number of pop-ups thrown by some sites, along with advertising ones mostly for life insurance now, I'm wasting a lot of time staring at my monitor waiting for IE to unfreeze.

i noticed same thing after installing ie6 and java 1.4--i think the new java platform effects the speed of the popups-
and doesnt integrate that good with ie 6

I can't see why java would even be activated on a popup that is just a simple bit of plain html.

well then must be something bout ie 6 cause i noticed
same problem as you but only after installing ie 6 could that be it ?--or maybe the security level in ie6 is more sensitive cause the popups hang then freeze the screen-the
only change i made was ie6 so thats my guess

this sucks. Do other 2k users not have ANY problems with slow popup browser windows?

I have not experienced this issue with my Win2K but I also use AdSubtPro to filter internet trash like pop-ups. Pop-up windows which open because I select to open them present no problem either, loads just fine. If you are dealing with pop-up ads, I would recommend you get a filter program like AdSubt and end those annoyances outright. GL!

Hmmm...Interesting.

Have you tried repairing IE???? What other software have you added or drivers have you upgraded. (I remember when I was upgrading the drivers on my system that something similar happened, but a reboot fixed it.)

Have you run SFC????

Have you tweaked IE????

I can try repairing it - i dont expect it'll help.. what is SFC? i reboot and the problem is gone until a few windows are open, and the machine has some days usage.. I havent tweaked IE, i havent got anything special installed its a very normal 2k/IE6 system.

Have you applied SP 2 for Win 2k and the compatibility update????

SFC is System File Checker. To run it go to the command prompt and type in SFC it will list all the options for how to run it. Be sure to put the Win 2k CD in so it can check against the files on it.

I would do a repair of IE and then run SFC to make sure everything is where it should be on the system.

Then I would tweak IE a little. First I would download X-Setup and update it so I would have the latest modules. Then I would launch the UI then click where it says Internet then click on Internet Explorer + System + Clear up Code Page References. Here is the info on what this module does:

said by Code Page Module:

When you right-click the mouse in Internet Explorer, the program checks its codepage settings in the Registry. If it finds a blank codepage, then it will try to locate a replacement. Doing this wastes a lot of time and processor cycles, so by removing the empty entries, the process can be speeded up.

This option lets you hide the blank settings, so IE won't try to find replacement codepages. This may greatly improve IE's performance.

On some machines your codepages may be correctly configured, in which case, using this option won't offer any improvements in performance. The plug-in will report back how many codepages were removed when the options is activated.
Then I would go to AXCEL216's website and apply the registry tweak mentioned as Browser Speed it can be found here:

After I did all that I would find something that would help with pop ups like Proxo, WebWasher, etc....
