[Cam] Medium Format Film -- UK and US

I have recently acquired a variety of medium format cameras, lenses, grips, tripods, and other accessories from my father-in-law's estate in the UK. All appear to be in excellent condition and, knowing him, I am not surprised. These include a Bronica and a couple of Russian MF cameras configured for stereo photography. There is a large number of color and B&W prints included and they are truly impressive.

I'd like to at least play with these and that brings up the question of where to buy film, get film processed, and get prints made (and possibly digitized).

So, the question is where to go for these services in the UK, especially reputable sources. Unfortunately, we did not pick up a MF slide projector, so all my messing about will likely involve color negative film. Since I still travel back and forth regularly between the US and UK, I could -- if push comes to shove -- bring exposed film back to the US for processing, but I hope that won't be necessary.

You should ask at photography-forum.org. It is mostly UK based people and very knowledgeable.

BH Photo has film for the Bronica. I owned one of them years ago, and always thought it to be a poor relative of the Hasselblad, though the large film size made up for a lot.
I used to do all my own processing; on occasion I would use Modernage in NYC for developing, contact sheets and scanning. They're still in business.

Thanks for that, also. I doubt that I will be bringing film back to the States from the UK but if I do, it's nice to know there's someplace reputable where I can get it processed.

No arguments on Hasselblad v. Bronica; it's just that the price is right on the Bronica. (free ) The stereo MF setup is based on two Russian Lubitel 2s (TLR cameras) -- definitely a cheaper MF camera.

If you bring exposed film through airport security, ask for them to be hand checked. There is
risk of fogging if sent through x-ray scanners. 120 roll film is especially vulnerable.

Yep, remember that problem post-9/11 with my film cameras. Never had any problems at the UK end, only at the US end. (Do these guys still know what film is???)

They have been indoctrinated to suspect all film to be underage teen pornography.

Does that mean they open every roll to check?

I think they just fondle the canisters. And, if they feel dirty, . . .

That would take too long, they just x-ray them to look and if they don't find anything, you're good to go.
