[Connectivity] Chicago Routing Issues

I made a post over on reddit and they suggested dropping a post over here as well to see if someone at comcast can gain traction.

My original post:

Hello, my home ISP is comcast, and I have some servers co-located at Net2EZ EWR1 in Piscataway NJ.
Since, last week about Thursday, every night at around 9pm, to somewhere about 1am, I see some packet loss and weird anomalies I haven't been able to figure out.

Here is a few things I have. Froim server to me:
Ping statistics for 98.243.12.196:
    Packets: Sent = 598, Received = 579, Lost = 19 (3% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 36ms, Maximum = 319ms, Average = 47ms

From me to server:
Ping statistics for 108.61.31.88:
    Packets: Sent = 115, Received = 113, Lost = 2 (1% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 36ms, Maximum = 120ms, Average = 51ms

Bunch of traceroutes:

Host isn't having much luck, repeating that they do not see anything wrong on their end. Anyone more experienced care to chime in? I am happy to try and gather more information needed.

Anyone over here have some insight? The post on reddit can be found here: »www.reddit.com/r/networking/comm···comcast/

yep, looks like saturated link to me. with Tata Communications (as6453.net on your tracert) in Chicago. AT&T Chicago links directly with NTT, while comcast route goes thru as6453.net. The posting about "peering" issues on reddit are correct. Even AT&T has saturated links from time to time in Chicago.

Any way to get someone involved to get it sorted out? This is a fairly big issue for my server to be unable to be reached by comcast users at these times.

Comcast is known for having their transit ports to TATA being saturated and this is far from a new issue.

You're likely to have better results by moving your server.

Having to chart these issues for ~80k VPN users at work, I can tell you there is congestion between TATA and Verizon, TATA and Centurylink, TATA and TimeWarner, TATA and Comcast.

There's a commonality there that is not simply Comcast running their connections hot.

I colo servers for personal/non-profit use in Chicago and Dallas, and I've had to play these games with moving my servers because the DCs had carriers that ended up using TATA as intermediate transit to Comcast & TWC folks.

It sucks, and sadly it's not going to get better anytime soon.

There is a commonality there but all of those connections are not the same. TATA is a transit provider for Comcast so they have complete control over when and where upgrades are made. The rest are peering with each other. Having peering links upgraded is a much trickier situation with all too often politics involved. and yes it is simply Comcast running their connections hot.

Of course it isn't because Comcast is greedy.

Yeah right, nevermind the fact that big C has dumped way more than any other cableco improving their network..... It sounds like they need a better transit provider, something that's easier said than done, especially in bandwidth hungry major market areas like I'd imagine Chicago is.

It's your choice if you want to be ignorant or not.
