This thread needs a bump. Preseason football starts this week!
Speaking of which, if anyone wants 2 free tickets to either Bears home pre-season game, send me a PM with which game you want. I'm tired of work people saying they'll use them and then backing out at the last minute...
Tickets are spoken for. |
|
 | Sent ya a PM. Doing my Bear dance hoping I was the first to hit ya up. |

Chargers tickets sent to Morfein, if anyone wants the Browns game just PM me.
Glad to see the Packers getting hit by the injury bug.... |
|
 | Thanks Jester. Tickets printed and ready to go. Figures Urlacher would retire, as that is my only game jersey and have a thing for NOT wearing non-current players jerseys. So hmmm... Man I'm excited... finally get to see soldier field. |

They did a really nice job when they re-did it. The upper deck seats are really up there though. Lasy time I went to a game I sat in 222.

jester121Premium join:2003-08-09 Lake Zurich, IL | heh... not as bad as the 400 level grandstand, trust me.
I only spent about 2 yrs on the season ticket waiting list, because I signed up during the dark ages in 2004 or so. The Bears offered first dibs on extra playoff tickets to people on the waiting list, so I got to buy face value seats to the New Orleans NFC championship game in Jan 2006, which was really cool -- except the seats were about 7 rows from the top of the grandstand. Holy shit, that bowl is steeeeep up there. Great view of the game, but I'm glad we were all bundled up in coats and packed in like sardines, because overserved people kept tipping over and there would have been some injuries....
I kind of like the view from the endzone for a change. You get an appreciation for how wide the field is and how fast the game is side-to-side, which you never notice on TV. |

Not too bad overall. Except that Webb is now getting beat on the right side. He really needs to just go. Some of the rookies look good too. Greene and Bostic made a couple of nice plays. Long looked good on that stunt. Bushrod seemed solid on the left side ( I know, not a rookie). Hopefully Melton won't be out too long with the concussion. I really like him. Will be nice to watch the starters get more and more time ans the weeks go on. |

Been saying it all year last seasons, Webb needs to go. There's no developing this kid, he just straight up sucks. |

I will be sorry to see Patrick Mannelly cut. Was he on punt coverage last year? |

Punt team's responsibility: Clean snap (LS) get the punt off (Punter) and then cover (gunners initially, rest of punt team covers also with punter the safety)
Often times the Long Snapper like Mannelly is the next cover guy covering the punt after the gunners - there are rules that protect the LS from being rushed by a DL on the punt, so usually the LS can get a pretty clean release to cover the punt |

I was watching for what is new in the offensive plan. In the 2 interceptions, it seemed to me that the target receiver was on what looked like a crossing route until stopping at a point to sit for the catch. The intercepted QBs lead the receivers as if the stopping was either unexpected or earlier than expected.
I don't remember this pattern much before , so I am suspecting getting this right is one of the new characteristics of the new Bears offensive plan. Maybe it was always there, and I just did not notice until the interceptions drew my attention.
It seems they were not working on long passes much except for McCown, who was overthrowing. Obviously the game plan for preseason is very different from regular. For example, I presume that the regular season will have a lot more runs despite the "west coast offense" thing.
What else is new about the new offensive plan? |

What else is new about the new offensive plan? Why would Mannelly get cut? Because of a sore rib? Long snappers have a very long shelf life. I could be wrong but I think he'll be around for at least another year or two.
Also yeah. The quick slants seem new to me as well. I'm no coach but on those slants I don't think the receiver is supposed to stop at all. Like you said, it's hard to tell now. You don't know if it's a play they're going to use or something they're just trying out. I do like the quick release though. That's definitely new. I'd rather watch them dink their way down field 5 yards at a time all year than always be in 3rd and 9 like they always seem to be with lovie. |

It was the "The Bears on Saturday signed rookie long-snapper Brandon Hartson to a three-year contract" »www.chicagobears.com/news/articl···e7d988c5 story that made me suspect that. Isn't it unusual for a team to carry 2 long snappers for long?

My first thought was that the receiver failed to continue his route because of the defender, but Cutler taking the blame implied that the receiver stopping was the plan. |
|
JonPremium join:2001-01-20 Lisle, IL | Oh I didn't know they brought in someone. Guess it makes sense that after 15 years you need to prepare for the inevitable.
And it's hard to say on that crossing pattern. I hate to sound like a fanboy but contrary to public opinion; I've never heard Cutler put the blame on anyone but himself. Even when he had every right to do so. |

Usually on short slants, the plan is to grab and KEEP running, not stop. The INT play, Alshon stopped and had to move his arms to his left, because he was supposed to keep running. They ran the same play the following possession, and it worked because the WR (Alshon again) kept moving. It was pretty much a miscommunication, but very much NOT Cutler's fault. Maybe he was just being humble. |

So it's preseason, and there's not really much to learn about what the team will look like during the regular season. New schemes, new guys, sure you can get a feel for things.
But the Bears looked organized. They're sending in 2 plays to Cutler every down, sometimes 3, and he can look over the defense and pick one. Say what you like, but he's a smart sonofabitch who is also a veteran, and not taking advantage of that would be idiotic (Lovie, Martz). He threw the ball away when he got flushed out of the pocket, and seemed to be picking up the blitzes a lot better -- probably due to the fact that all 4 D linemen weren't crashing through the O line on every play.
I'm really looking forward to September football now. |

You will definitely notice the changes this season. Last year, I can't count the number of times I asked myself, "why the fuck would you run that play?". Knowing Trestman's history alongside the smarts of Phil Emery, I can say this, brace yourselves Bears fans, because we are in for a wild ride (in a good way ). This is the new Trestament! |

yeah it's nice that they give him the option to check out of a run. Rivera is blitz happy. Packers lost their starting LT. Their RB has a bum hamstring and their back up QB are just awful. I think they'll get it together on offense. Defense hasn't been an issue in recent memory. So the coaches can focus on the Offense. |

I know it's only preseason but good lord. The Raiders are absolutely awful. |
|
 | Any thoughts on the second half? The discrepancy was about as large the other way. |
|
JonPremium join:2001-01-20 Lisle, IL | The second half went about as expected IMO. Most of those guys won't be around. You can really see the difference. It looks so chaotic out there when the second team is in. If you watched the whole game, I loved the look on Peppers face when Lou Canellis was interviewing him and he stopped to watch that play. It was pretty funny.
Also, is it just that I never noticed before or is everyone for some reason this year, referring to the line backers as Will, Mike and Sam? I know that's what they're called technically. I just don't recall really ever hearing anyone use it before in a broadcast. Now I hear it all the time. |
|
jester121Premium join:2003-08-09 Lake Zurich, IL | Jim Miller likes using inside baseball terminology to show how smart he is (I like his analysis actually, just poking fun). I hear it on sports talk radio some times, but maybe it's becoming mainstream.
It's just a footballism for Weak, Middle, Strong -- I don't think it's an official designation except in certain team's schemes. |
|
JonPremium join:2001-01-20 Lisle, IL | Jim Miller looks exactly the same.
Cutler looked good too and forte was a beast. But again, it was the Raiders. |

I'm with ya Jon, I actually enjoyed watching the new play calling, and of course it was good to scream insults at the idiot J'Marcus Webb one last time (hopefully). |
