Mediacom competitionMany of you may not be aware of the fact that Mediacom DOES face strong competition in a number of cities in Iowa. This competition comes not from CenturyLink, Frontier, or any other ILEC. It comes from municipal broadband utilities in several cities. Examples include Cedar Falls, where gigabit internet is available on their fiber-to-the-home platform; Spencer, where customers can subscribe to 100 Mbps down/ 10 Mbps up; and many others, none of which currently have caps. I would be curious to see if Mediacom will be enforcing caps in these municipal communities.

They actually have a lot of competition in Iowa. Dozens of independent telcos are deploying ftth, nearly all uncapped. There are several munis, all uncapped. There is a cable overbuilder in Cedar Rapids, ImOn. There are even some wireless companies that offer uncapped service with 4G speeds.

Here in So. Illinois Mediacom really only has to worry about Frontier. Frontier has given me an offer of 24/2 for $55 a month without a cap. We have high hopes for a local company that just put in a large fiber ring but we have to wait for them to find 3rd parties to offer residential service.

Re: Mediacom competitionAmazing that Frontier offers 24/2 DSL in Marion, IL. Here, near Peoria, IL, they only offer 3/.7 DSL here for slightly less $. I verified that 3M DSL is their maximum offering to my house, with the local technical supervisor. My other choice is Comcast. However, new fiber provider coming soon(cannot wait)!
Mediacom is a major cable/internet provider in rural Illinois communities. Their major Telco DSL competition is Frontier. Other DSL competition would include Fairpoint, Century Link, some AT&T DSL, Consolidated, and assorted small telcos.
I doubt that many rural Mediacom customers have access to anything approaching some of the high speeds listed above.

Re: Mediacom competitionFrontier offered me 12/2 last summer and with me being 2 blocks from the co they thought I'd get about 17.

I have been down to Marion,IL and all I see is that crappy frontier down there fastest I seen down there was 3meg and that is freaking slow on dsl. Isnt there any WISP's down that area or not?
Everytime I stayed at an hotel that is all they have is that crappy frontier 3meg service there in Marion.

Re: Mediacom competitionWhat hotel are you staying in? Its been my experience that you can't judge internet service in an area by what a hotel gives you. Bonded pair dsl has only really been in Marion for a year. There is one wireless isp in the area and they're slower than dsl. Since most hotels here are 3 miles from frontiers co, if they did have dsl there you should count yourself lucky it wasn't slower.

congrats, im irate about this B.S. move. why? because there isnt any REAL competition here. note i said "real" my choices? mediacom, satilite, cellulare. no dsl, or any thing else. granted the caps are "better" than others but there should either be uncapped limited speed, or unlimited speed with a data cap, im so sick and tired of the clear double dip.

Re: Mediacom competitionI agree that there is no real competition. But I doubt we see any real change until we get the next generation of law makers and business men in place. As it is our 'leaders' are not seeing where technologies are going and help it along. They see the internet as a big evil thing used for identity theft, piracy and porn.
