Amongst other things it has an Idiot proof on/off switch and can be submerged in water up to 3 ft deep. I've been thinking about getting a GoPro for some time but I haven't actually used one. From what I've read, it seems to be a very basic point&shoot that does video and stills with a very wide lens. Everything I've seen looks like it was shot with a goPro. It's a specialized camera. There's no raw and the controls seem rather limited. There is a LCD back you can purchase as an accessory. Some models work with wireless cards that allow you to control the camera and download your video or stills to an iOS device.
When and if I decide to get one I'd probably go with the Hero 3 Black Edition that comes with some accessories including the wireless adapter. if you buy the Naked edition you'll probably want some accessories soon enough.

I agree. Before you buy any camera have a list handy of "absolute requirements" and "would like" abilities. The waterproof ability of the aforementioned Contour Roam HD sounds like a fun thing to be able to play with. Do you have kids or grandkids that like to go swimming? Do you hang out by the water with friends? What happens to the GoPro if it suddenly starts raining? What are the operating temperatures of each? Also the Hero Naked is no longer being sold directly by GoPro so you may have to search around for accessories. They could become scarce in the future if the camera is no longer in production.

Three feet is hardly comparable to GoPro's 300ft under. --

The stock housing is good down to more than any normal person might ever go. They do sell a "dive housing" that is meant for deeper depths and actual scuba diving.
I have an H3 Black and it is AMAZING!! The images/video that come from this thing are nothing short of spectacular. There is no comparison to the Contour as far as accessories go, and the GoPro accessories are not that expensive. The most expensive thing anybody might go for is the LCD back for $80. Even then, the iPhone/iPad app does the same thing and so much more, and is free. WiFi is built into the camera, it's not a card or accessory. You can preview everything and EVERY function of the camera is adjustable from the app.
I must also add, even though the still from it look great, IMO a GoPro will NOT replace a video and still camera. I serves a VERY cool purpose, but it is NOT an everyday camera.

I would hardly call the stock housing huge. Not even close. It's still smaller than many compact cameras.
I've worn the stock housing Hero2 on my arm doing all manner of activities. Most recently climbing/tree adventures and riding a jetski in the waterproof housing.

Well actually it was initially iPhone only, but they quickly wised up and realized there are 10x+ more android devices out there than Apple. Just like the PC world.
And in fact a number of official GoPro beyond basic Android apps and several third party now. --

The housing is not HUGE just large enough to contain the tiny camera. And no reason to take it out of it if you are regularly going to be around water, especially with the wireless remote. --

Not to get into a side debate, but this is SO incredibly not true. Right now it's pretty near even sales wise, with a slight edge to Android. World wide Android has a significant edge, but by NO means is it 10X+. And just know, I am by no means an Android hater like all the Apple haters out there.
I agree with Speedy Petey. Let's NOT turn this into an Android/iOS debate. Personally I could care less about the number of devices or number of apps for a device I don't own. What's important is that there are apps available. I've already decided on which phone I want to use but I haven't made up my mind about the GoPro.
