any non TWC VoIP system will work, such as magicjack and obihai. typical DSL is 5mbps so you could only watch video at 460p on a good day. |

Agreed. Unless they providing similar speeds for lower prices, I don't recommend switching to DSL at all. But though AT&T do have plans that has similar speeds with some TWC's plans, Max(12mbps/1.5mbps), Max Plus(18mbps/1.5mbps), Max Turbo(24mbps/3mbps), and even Power(45mbps/6mbps, only a few markets), if your house is qualified for those speeds, you can probably use it for bargain, or switch it over if they offer good prices. |
|
 | Thank you. My phone line is unused, I'm in Wilmington, close enough to the nearest hub, can DSL provide speeds comparable to cable? I'm dismayed at the lack of competition and the brazen monopolistic pricing. Are you saying $50 is reasonable for basic internet access? |

4 edits | you don't seem to follow our line of reasoning, so let me put it to you more plainly.
if my building had these 3 options:
$50/mo 15/1 TWCable $30/mo 5/.7 VerizonDSL $20/mo 1/.1 Satellite
I would pick TWCable every time...
just to illustrate how dead DSL is; here in NYC where FiOS does not reach half the people yet, Verizon has not bothered to upgrade their ADSL to ADSL2, so we are all stuck at 3-7/.7 at best here (depending how far you are from your area Central Office) in: high price high earning high population density NYC. |
|
 | I see, we both have the same price ($50/mo, which is $10 above the average) but the speed advantage of cable over DSL is worth it?
Interesting, you'd think NY would be more competitive than a little beach town in North Carolina. |

said by ipwn3r456:Just wondering how much do people pay for TWC internet in this forum. Make sure to put price (excluding modem, etc.), speeds or tier, and location.
I am paying $35 for standard internet, in LA, used to be $29.99 when I got the promotion for signup, now they give me the $35 summer sale one after 12 months.
it actually is.
Example is the Fios setboxes I rent them for 6.99 and lots of places have them for 10.99 rental.
Also it does seems weird that Packteeters doesnt have at least TWC I always thought Forest Hills was TWC only.
Packeteers will probobaly know I used to live in Ridgewood which is not far and had TWC there for few months then switched to fios the first day I saw it availiable. |

I'm on 15/1 TWCable now - just DSLR lost my review when they updated their web sight a few months back. I'm actually a few days away from upgrading my docsis2 to a docsis3 modem - hoping for better line stability during high demand downloads.
»forums.timewarnercable.com/t5/Co···85#U7085
I don't pay 50/mo I just used that as an example. and yes, there is no competition yet to my building. a few blocks away is RCN, and a few blocks further is FiOS, but my building is very TWCable loyal because we get a $10/mo discount on any service they provide, so RCN or FiOS don't think they can get the 50% penetration they need to justify lighting up our building.
Rebellious - this is why your NC town does not have a competitor - nobody will bother unless they know half the current TWCable subs are likely to switch. also if your beach town has a history of flooding or hurricanes, that's another issue keeping competitors away. here in coastal NY/NJ after hurricane Sandy entire town cable & phone systems got wiped out. you'd think competitors would now be lining up to rebuild and be first to monopolize the area - but instead they are all staying away - coastal towns are lucky to still have cell service here so most use gsm/gprs modems on unlimited voice/data plans to get online at a snails pace. |

I was paying $40 for Standard 15/1 plus $10 more for a promo for Turbo 20/2 for one year. (Standard is $55 as stand alone but lower if packaged).
This month, besides the increase in the modem rental fee that I knew was coming, there was a $2 a month increase in the Standard fee(Turbo remains on promo for me until the end of Nov or Dec - promo frequently is for 13 months instead of 12 I was told). I was puzzled by the $2 increase for Standard internet as I couldn't find anything about it on Oceanic's website and nothing on the bill either.
So, today when I paid the bill at the office, I asked about it. It turns out I was coming off a promo for Standard hence the $2 increase. I don't recall being on a promo for Standard but I guess I was and that ended. Anyhow, the CSR gave me the current promo price for Standard 15/1 which is $30! Plus, she said when Turbo promo ends likely there will be another promo. So, I save $10! Oceanic's website has nothing about this $30 month promo for Standard 15/1 so it really does pay to go in the office and ask.
Plus, get this, NEW SPEEDS COMING very soon - probably next month! no specifics but we were talking about Turbo currently costing too much (if not on promo) for the small amount of download speed increase over Standard so that will addressed she said. I predict something like 25 down for Turbo. I think Extreme will increase also and maybe Ultimate all in time for Christmas.
I didn't think to ask but I wonder if the upcoming new speeds are the reason for the current over provisioning? -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

the CEO already spoke about this during a recent shareholder meeting. they are just giving back some of what they took away over the summer. the way it happened was like this;
standard was 15/1, then they made that $4/mo modem lease fee last fall, and to compensate they unofficially gave us 20/1 last winter, then they cancelled speedcache this past summer and took us back down to 15/1. then they increased the modem lease from $4 to $6/mo, so now by year end they are giving us back another 10% of speed, so while it won't be 20/1 again, we may all get to enjoy 17/1 soon (I'm already at 16/1 now). this speed bump may be felt by all plans below 30/5, since 30/5 and 50/5 plans get a docsis3 modem lease free from TWCable included, so they don't feel like they owe you anything.
I do agree with you that turbo does not make sense, and they need to modify it somehow. to go from 15/1 to 20/2 for $10/mo more plus $6 lease is not worth it when 30/5 is $25 more modem included. turbo is worth maybe $5/mo+lease more to me, so if they offered that price i'd go for it, or as you said $10/mo+lease for 25/2 (which is still under the docsis2 top rate for those still stuck on older modems). |

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 1 edit | No one got 20/1 last year here. On all neighbor islands 10/1 continued until this spring! Oahu got 15/1 in November when everyone on the Mainland did but not the rest of Hawaii and there was never 20/1 for anyone here. I read the CEO's statement and it had NOTHING to do with us. I guess he forgot Hawaii is also TWC.
I had Standard at 10/1 in July 2012. I was advised to get Turbo at 15/1 before it disappeared ($10 a month more). So, I did that and Turbo at 15/1 disappeared on August 1 and was replaced by Turbo at 20/2 for $20 a month more. Standard remained at 10/1. In November, Oahu got Standard tier raised to 15/1 but all other islands remained at 10/1 until spring 2013. I was grandfathered to old Turbo at 15/1 for $10 a month more than Standard but I was offered the new Turbo at 20/2 last Nov with no increase in the price for one year.
So, I was very lucky to be advised to get the old Turbo at 15/1 just before it disappeared as I could afford $10 a month more for Turbo but not $20. If I had not done that I would have been on 10/1 until a few months ago when the neighbor islands finally got upgraded to 15/1 for Standard. I don't think the overprovisioning is what the CSR was telling me. She said there will be NEW SPEEDS BEFORE CHRISTMAS. Since I currently get 23/2 I think that Turbo will officially be sold at 25/2 before the holidays and the overprovisioning will go away.
Plus, what do you mean Extreme and Ultimate don't pay modem rental fee? Of course, they pay it! Plus, everyone at 15/1 and above gets DOCSIS 3 modem now from Oceanic. I was required to get a DOCSIS 3 modem for 20/2 (but it is also given out for 15/1 now). I rent the modem and since Turbo is $20 a month more than Standard why would TWC make you pay for the rental of the modem but not if you paid and additional $10 for Extreme? That makes no sense. If you are correct then Extreme is only $4 a month more than Turbo so why would anyone get Turbo?
Oceanic's website indicates ALL TIERS PAY $5.95 a month for modem rental. What do you mean you are stuck on a DOCSIS 2 modem? Just exchange it for a DOCSIS 3 one if you rent or buy a DOCSIS 3 one if you plan to buy your own. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. 2 edits | single down channel docsis2 can handle up to 30mbps so 20mbps does not require a docsis3 modem (at least not here in NYC) it's simply recommended. seems you are right about top tiers plans not giving you modems - i thought they did, sorry. it seems now the 15/1 to 30/5 price different is $20 here now... how compelling must resist temptation to give cable monopoly more of my money...

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | Here DOCSIS 3 modem is required for 20/2. You should get one even for 15/1 and TWC ought to exchange the old DOCSIS 2 one for you. A DOCSIS 3 modem makes a big difference even on 15/1. I have 6 bonded channels down and 2 bonded up (probably should have 3 as the other side of this island has 3 bonded up). You get those even on 15/1 and it makes a big difference. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

| if you read my posts from yesterday on another stability thread, i can tell you first hand that docsis2 to docsis3 on 15/1 only improves latency (here in nyc) not speed. docsis2 modems are becoming unstable on 15/1 service probably because twcable neglects to push out firmware updates to them as they upgrade the rest of their network to docsis3. the firmware on the docsis2 modem that i just retired was 5 revisions ago despite being live on their system for the past year. |

Wow. Ultimate (with no promo) is $105 in Hawaii ($50 more than Standard which is $55 (with no promo). Oceanic's website shows NO promos for internet tiers. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

I didn't mean to imply it would improve speed to get a DOCSIS 3 modem for 15/1. What it does do is provide a great deal more stability so that speed is not all over the place depending on the time of day. I'm not sure why it would improve latency. The speed of light is the speed of light. How could it improve on that? I see the same latency on any speed, any modem be it DOCSIS 2 or 3.
