Well I did have the 2TB limit on the 50/5, but now I'm back down to 999GB. What's going on? |

said by MediacomChad:Hey everyone! I want to clear up some confusion here about what is going on with the new allowances.
All Ultra 50 customers will have a 1 TB allowance
All Ultra 105 customers will have a 2 TB or 3 TB allowance, depending on which service you are subscribed to.
Grandfathered Ultra 50 customers were moved to the Ultra 105 service to make up some differences in price between the old and new services.
There is a graphical error on the usage meter showing some customer having Ultra 50 with a 2 TB allowance. Also, some Ultra 105 customers are still showing 999 GB. This is being addressed and should be fixed soon.
said by MediacomChad:If you were on grandfathered Ultra 50 plan, you would now have the same Ultra 105 speeds with a 2 TB allowance that you have now.
I noticed that the usage meter for your account still shows 999 GB. That is being addressed as well.
Which is it?
Can you clarify the difference between the upper tiers, there seems to be 5. Here's my understanding, from what I've read. • Grandfathered Ultra 50 - Speed: 105/10 Cap: 2 TB • Ultra 50 - Speed: 50/5  Cap: 1 TB • Grandfathered Ultra 100 - Speed: 105/10  Cap: 3 TB • Ultra 100 - Speed: 105/10  Cap: 2 TB • Ultra 100 Max (3T) - Speed: 105/10  Cap: 3 TB
Also, not trying to be too picky, but... 999GB does not equal 1 TB. There is a 25 GB difference. Hopefully Mediacom is just getting rid of the "999" thing, as it was an odd number to begin with. |

said by rudnicke:Now that you took away the extra TB, I have to turn my connection completely off for the next seven days until it cycles again. I believe it has been said here that the charging of overage fees takes affect with the first billing period that starts on or after Sept. 7. If you were originally a grandfathered account, then I believe you are okay for the remaining seven days. But if you are not one of the original grandfathered accounts, and therefore already subject to overage charges, then you might have to discontinue or severely limit use. You may want to ask MediacomChad on your specific situation. |

My mistake, it WAS because they added a modem rental when I changed to their ultra 105 package. That was after telling them I've owned my own modem for years now. I've been trying to get the charge removed for the last few weeks. I got Chad to remove the last charge yesterday. I guess I'm the one who hasn't looked at my bill. Iowa still sucks though. |

Ok could this get anymore confusing?
So I have the 50/5 on a promo that is almost up (Which I will be ditching because it's too freaking expensive out of promo) more on that in a bit.
I think $60/mo is completely reasonable for 50/5 which is serving me well with a 1TB cap.
So now I have 108/10 with a 2TB cap which I don't need thanks to this mystery upgrade.
So next month I need to cancel my now 108/10 service for a 15/2 service then call back and get a new promo for yet another 50/5 service... which I assume now will really be 50/5? (Yea a rep told me to do that)
Jeez just leave things alone and stop dinking around. 1 Year promos are so stupid... just about ready to get Century Link 12/1 so my bill will stop changing for a few years.
Oh and renting your own modem... yea that took a while to get fixed but did after a while come back. |

 | What a freakin mess. I had the grandfathered unlimited data plan which went blam with the new rules. So I upped to the 50/5 plan. Every 12 hours or so it changes on my usage meter page from 50/5 with 2TB to 100/1 with 999GB. In the middle of all that they are now adding modem fees to my bill, and I haven't "rented" a modem from before Mediacom was even in Iowa. So I call an ask why, they don't know, oops, will fix it, you "may" see a correction in 2-3 billing cycles. WHAT? I can't get a land line where I live to try DSL so at present I am stuck with Mediacom. |

I am extremely disappointed in the (what seems to the be ENTIRE) internet / data provider industry in regards to the blatant money grab that is the "Bandwidth Cap Scam".
To put it simply, data "consumption" is INHERENT to using the internet. I use the quotation marks because consuming data is IMPOSSIBLE, as data is infinite. You want data? Right-click on your desktop, create a new text file. POOF! You've just created data. Data is being created as I type each letter of this post. For all of these internet service providers to cram a datacap down our collective throats is nonsense.
We all (cable internet users) were already gladly paying higher prices for the faster speeds we were receiving -- without any concern to how much "data we were consuming". It was completely fair. You want a faster connection speed? Pay a higher price. Completely reasonable.
As is already known, as technology / software sophistication progress; so do the demands of bandwidth for everything. The problem here is that now all the internet providers have caught on to this unavoidable trend and came up with the datacap scam to find an additional way to squeeze every last nickel and dime that they could from their subscribers who were already paying premium prices for their higher speeds.
The FCC recently released a rather expensive (and quite damning) report stating that the concept of datacaps implemented by providers is a flat-out money-grabbing scam. Unfortunately, now that the scam has been adopted by practically every data provider in the country (and perhaps the world), there's going to be little to nothing that the FCC will be able to do to protect the end-user. Something needs to be done, and FAST.
For now, all a "data hog" such as myself can do is cough up more money for a higher datacap. Yup. There it is again. MORE MONEY. The only reason I used to hit my former 250,000 gb cap every month is because I build / repair / troubleshoot computers as a side business out of my home, so I'm constantly downloading OS updates, utilities, etc. for my clients' computers.
Am I "eating up" the supply of data so there's not enough left for everyone else? NOPE -- that is impossible. Am I downloading / transmitting more data than a typical user? sure.. but there's no reason why I (nor any other subscriber) should be punished if I'm paying my monthly bills and holding up my end of the bargain for my internet service. -- I'm paying for the rate I get, and I shouldn't be limited as to how often or how much I use the service.
Mods, I completely understand if this post is moved to the "rants" section.. but I felt it appropriate that the facts be presented in this discussion. No hard feelings. |

drslashGoya AsmaPremium join:2002-02-18 Marion, IA | While I agree with your points, the other point that Mediacom never says a word about but it is the primary and perhaps the only reason for caps; loss of TV subscribers. "unlimited" data allows content consumers to drop the TV service subscription and obtain information and entertainment from the internet only. Since this is the implied logic that Mediacom is using, then Mediacom should not have a data cap or allowances on accounts that subscribe to the TV service too. The increase in revenue from overage charges is far smaller than the loss in revenue due to TV subscriber loss. Overage charges is a money grab but preserving TV subscribers is the unspoken money grab.
Since you stated that you use your internet connection with your side business then you should subscribe to a business account. As far as I know, the business accounts have no allowances or caps. Yes, the monthly rate is higher. If I was using my account as you do, that is what I would do. I use my account as part of my work but it is not high volume usage. -- Save water...drink beer! -- #occupytheworkplace -- Obama...it's junior high school all over again! -- Democrats don't mind raising taxes because democrats don't pay taxes. |
