Re: New Data Caps

You are incorrect about a few things. While you are right that the price for data is going down that is not there only cost. As we use more and more data the nodes are becoming overloaded. Depending on how far they have to string cable that can be upwards of 20000.00 just for that. Are they doing it as fast as they need to to keep up, Nope. But the point is they do have to do this and there are other cost for teck that keep going up also. They must do upgrades system wide as data use increases. Now why should grandma down the street pay a higher rate when all she does is a little web surfing a few emails, When the person next door is going through 2 or 3000 gigs and the reason they have to upgrade. I have heard so many complain that they should only target the 3 percent that use so much and not the other 97 percent. That is all this does, If you are the 97 percent that does not use a lot this does not impact you. This does not stop you from using the internet. You will just be paying for the amount you use. During the days of electrification when providers of electricity changed from a flat rate to usage as we have it now, it did not stop inovation. Every body kept buying all the new things that used the electricity. I have heard so much about corporate greed, what about consumer greed. I own my own company and have seen this first hand. Everybody wants everything for free. We have become a nation that thinks were owed everything. Now is Mediacom a great company. NO, if I did the stuff they do I would have no clients. But then there are a lot who do what I do so I have to be focused on CS and be better than the rest. My point is this, I am so sick of hearing from those who have never run a company, who have no ideal what it cost to run a company and provide this service think they should decide what the price should be when that dont have a clue what it cost to provide this service. If you dont like it then go to century link or whatever other companys do biz where your at. But dont presume to be able to say what something should cost when you dont have any ideal what it cost to provide that service. Am I tired of corporate greed. No I am more tired of consumer greed.

I would certainly get a business account if:

1.) I had enough revenue from client work to afford / justify it.

2.) I had a "brick-n-mortar" location which was dedicated to just my business.

I'm just a guy with 15 years of experience who knows his way around a computer. My main source of income is in IT for a major automobile advertising publishing company... which is of course not paying me what I'm worth. These days, it's extremely difficult for an IT professional to get paid their worth without working their behinds off.

I also intentionally severely undercut my competition by charging flat rates for the work I do because most of my clients are normal folks who live paycheck to paycheck. I charge no bench fees, either. Some months, I'll not do a single client job, while others I'll be swamped. "feast or famine" as they say. *shrugs*.

I'm also one of those people who dropped my TV service from Mediacom. Frankly, the bang for the buck just isn't there.. not to mention all the commercials getting BLASTED at you (high volume level-wise). So I switched to satellite and never looked back.

You all have no one to blame but yourselves on the entire industry data cap cash grab. You were all stupid enough to pay $120+ a month for 1-2gig limits for your cell phones and are happy as pig in $^#^. What you think pissing money away like that and another industry wouldn't take notice and want in on the free money too, haha right.

But as far as this cluster$%# of a change keep going mediacom you almost have my service listed right
Mediacom Ultra Plus
105Mbps Download / 10Mbps Upload
999 GB monthly usage allowance

Woo hoo it now says 105 instead of 100down, now if you just get the 2000GB a month listed right. You're all set.

To Happyman: If I Pay for a service and I have from Mediacom since 2000, I expect to get what I pay for. There wasn't any caps in place back then and I didn't have a "contract" or a "datacap" as chad says.
I DO own a business and have for 23 yrs. You are quite wrong with your statement of everyone wants everything for free!!! Not true. Some do want bonus' or barter like they are getting something for nothing but most folks just want what they pay for. I don't see consumer greed like you do, or I'd throw in the towel from frustration.
I do agree with if I treated my clients/customers the Mediacom does I would be out of business. Small town of 6000 word gets around fast. But they have a large monopoly on "high speed internet" throughout the u.s. of a. that they can abuse their clients. Time will tell how many clients they lose over this new way of doing business. My original post was to just wake up people to see how many are discontent. Mediacom has upped the thresholds of their tiers but I still don't like the idea of capping 100% when only 3% of us overuse. can we say ''cash grab"??

I don't remember if I posted to this thread yet but mediacom's data cap rates are fairly industry standard and actually better than industry standard if you get the 50MB or 100MB service. 999GB is plenty of bandwidth, though if I was them I would raise the 100MB service to 2TB.. this would insure without a doubt that it can be a full replacement for cable, handling the most demanding needs of bandwidth from a family of netflix users, or whatever.

They're not going away.. best you can hope is that they raise them in fits and spurts just like they do with bandwidth speeds over time. Also expecting full speeds 100% of the time is impractical, though I must say I get pretty much full speed on mine most of the day, and try to time big downloads to happen in the middle of the night and/or morning just to throw them a helping hand.

Maybe they could have some sort of download 'happy hour' to supplement their bandwidth caps.. say download whatever you want from 3AM - 7AM or something.

1TB may be plenty for you, but not for everyone.

And the cap on the 105 service is 2TB.

What bothers me most about these caps is not the fact that they are in place, but rather Mediacom feels the need to tell its CS reps to lie to us. This is just their way of making more money. Be honest about it. Don't try to tell me this will 'improve service'.

actually if you were on a overloaded node it could improve service. But thats a long shot. I hate caps but in our neck of the woods its mediacom or well frontcrap...

Curious: Do MC employees get lines without caps? If so, I may go to work for MC.

From what was told to me everything is free, but I'm not sure about data caps. The 100/10 service has an internet cap of 999GB. Do you think you'll exceed that?

the 105/10 service has a 2TB cap....

Does anyone know if those SamKnows routers take up a lot of data? Now that the caps are sorted, I'd like to turn this thing back on so they can continue to monitor the bandwidth speeds. I'm concerned that I might take a large hit on the data cap.

The samknows site says it uses about 2gb a month.
My samknows router seems to be on its way out so I'm thinking about killing it.

I rec'd a response from their support department. He said that in the UK they use about 4GB per month, but in the US the routers use a LOT more. He wouldn't be specific though.

I hate this new data cap. It does nothing to curb usage during peak times and is just a cheap ploy to increase prices without increasing rates. Since we have no high-speed alternative in the Quad-Cities, I have decided to spend my TV money with DirecTV. Loving it so far. I'll pray for Google fiber to come to this area to cut the Mediacom cord completely.

Google has caps as well. And they are also changing their caps.

Please explain how Grandma is able to pay less than the next person if they're both on the same plan but have different usage?

Mediacom's standard plan is 15mbps and so Grandma, who just does a little web surfing and email, pays the same as the next person on the same plan who may be using X times more bandwidth - as long as the person stays within the new data cap.

This is not about allowing Grandma to pay less. She is still paying the same today as she was 6 months ago.

really? i contacted them back in august, the reply i got was 10GB - 12GB for the speed tier im on, higher tiers use more for testing.

Hello ,

Thank you for contacting SamKnows about your bandwidth usage.

The tests from your monitoring unit uses approximately 10-12Gb per month based on your 3x0.256 package (not including your own internet activities, of course). Higher speeds consume more bandwidth, as we need to use a larger sample size to simulate downloading and uploading to fully stress the bandwidth.

I hope this helps, if you require any further assistance, please don’t hesitate to email us at [redacted].

Kind regards,

Ati

The SamKnows Team

note: removed the email to help reduce spam, probably wont do much but meh, any one that uses them should be able to find the addy easy enough.

Okay you and grandma are both on prime with 15 mbps with 250 gig limit. Grandma uses 5 gigs a month, you use 500 gigs. your use makes them have to upgrade the node. well you will have to pay extra because you went over the data limit. You will be paying for the upgrade. Not grandma. They wont have to raise prices on grandma
