Re: New Data Caps

I wish I had better options, but in my location, the only other alternative is CL, and they can't even guarantee me fast service.

What really sucks now is that I'll have to turn away business. Between all the work on websites I do, plus computer maintenance on the side, I'm sure to blow the caps. I can just imagine re-installing Windows 7 and all the updates on every computer I work on.

I can bitch and moan all I want, and everyone of us know that Mediacom doesn't care one bit. It's whatever lines their pockets is what counts, not the people who put the money there in the first place. If I could afford switching to a higher tier, I would. But due to not having a full-time job, and only making money here and there on the projects I do on the web, there's no way I could get it, even if it was available. It's really a shame what this company has turned into from what I signed up for 10 years ago.

there's actually competition in this town from multiple sources but they are no better than mediacom except they may not have the bandwidth caps.. I'll have to check into that. Pricewise it's a wash. The other ones require phone service with the cable which is kind of silly in 2013 and charge $15 for it.. go figure.

If I had a family I'd just suck it up and get the 50MB service, no cable, and tell my kids to watch whatever they want on netflix or I can torrent it for them.

Being single I just use the launch service with my own modem since the contract has expired until a rep comes along and gives me reason to pay more. If for some reason I stumble past 150GB and get charged 10 bucks I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

I guess I better slow down a little bit.

In the Des Moines area there's only Mediacom and CenturyLink as far as I know. The best I can get on CL is 7/256.

There is also NexGen Communications, but I think they stick to serving businesses.

Interesting. Those providers should get themselves listed on Connect Iowa. It is an absolutely tremendous resource that several other states also have. A lot of inaccuracies still, but definitely improving. You can pinpoint any location in the state and find out who offers service there.

You have a WISP listed as serving Oelwein called Community Digital Wireless. But they are a little pricey.

Unfortunately I doubt that will be happening anytime soon. Centurylink doesn't seem to care about most of the areas they serve in the state, even markets where they have competition.

Speed Connect is giving a little competition to some places. But they have yet to rollout in the majority of the area they hold spectrum licenses.

Verizon Wireless - that's not going to be cellular broadband, right? That's a joke. Iowalink's page(s) appear to be dead. Omni Internet didn't yield anything in a search. DirecTV? If that's satellite broadband, it'll be overpriced and capped. Freese-Notis uses Qwest/CenturyLink lines. Thin Air Communications appears to be based in Colorado and is microwave-based stuff. Alliance technologies doesn't seem to be an ISP and is more about networking stuff for businesses. Crossroads International Communcations uses Qwest/Centurylink Lines. Lightedge Solutions provides data center/dsiaster recovery/cloud computing and voice services - nothing about being an ISP. The Urbandale Internet Service webpage redirects to something that promotes Centurylink. Same with the West Des Moines Internet Service link. Can't find anything about DMX.

None of those are viable options unless my sleep-addled brain missed something incredibly obvious. I didn't just fall off the turnip truck. If there were a faster uncapped option in my area, I'd be on it.

Your analysis is correct. The only other seemingly legit ISP I found for our area is Prairie iNet, but I'm not certain they offer urban installations.

I've had to wait to hear back from Chad, sometimes multiple hours. Maybe there's been a recent change or something. But I never felt like I was dealing with a different person each time. Anything's possible though.

I got my "official" notification of being placed under a cap today via my mediacom email address and the options available. So to the few of you earlier who were saying some of us just must have "missed it" or something. Wrong.

I've had a terrible time with Mediacom in the past 3 months. In the past month alone there has been at least five outages that lasted all day if not several hours. I realize problems arise, but at least in this area (southeast KS) it happens alot and takes forever to resolve. If it weren't for all the outages I've had the data cap really wouldn't bother me. But putting a data cap on this crappy service I already have isn't justified. I have no other option besides Mediacom so there isn't much I can do.

There is an in-browser message that was previous mentioned in this thread that explains it as well. If you have any questions about your current usage, or about how to setup an email address, feel free to send me an IM with your account or phone number and I will look into this.

That's part of their bandwidth management feature to help you manage your data cap.

You really need to install bandwidth monitoring. I use ieyenet (I'm on a mac) which is based on STG. It monitors bandwidth usage at the router. Mediacom showed me using a little over 80 gig last month, ieyenet 62 gb. So far this billing cycle aprox 18 gb, ieyenet 11gb. I'm well under the 350gb limit but still, someone is going to get billed for bandwidth they didn't actually use when there is a 32% discrepancy.

I'm not exactly sure who one would report this to, but I urge everyone to take matters in their own hand and monitor their own bandwidth and keep records. I think with most routers it's not that hard to monitor. I can see a 5% discrepancy, but 32..no way.

I have my usage tracking on in my Netgear and I gotta say it's pretty much right on so far with this months usage as reported by Mediacom.

I'm now getting all my data transfers in now before the caps go live. Backing up all my valuables and work-related files to the cloud, and it's guaranteed to blow over the 250 GB. Doing this backup is just extremely painful at 1 Mb/s. C'mon, give us more upload speed. This is ridiculous!

Make sure you are logging your upload as well, as Mediacom is counting that. For someone who is doing a lot of uploading, it could easily be off by that much.

And you should pay attention to packets dropped by your router. Just because you don't accept them doesn't mean that they don't count. If your assigned IP address is in the packet headers, that packet will be counted against your cap; even if it never traverses your NAT.

Also, somehow I get the feeling that MC will count ARP messages on the coax network as well, even though they have to be there for things to work...

Very displeased with the Mediacom data caps. They are not fooling anyone with this. This is just a way for them to gouge more money for nothing. If there another provider local with the same bandwidth I would be gone.

Look at the basic usage report ,, does not give you any details period! what a joke. Is it packets in/out? Not even a daily or weekly option to view. TRASH!

We have no alternative here. We also don't seem to have an upgrade option (and can't afford one anyway, our Mediacom bill is already ridiculous).

Between the websites I maintain and backup, three of us with Netflix accounts that we use daily, online games being played, and God forbid there's a Steam sale twice a year...(oh btw, thanks a lot for pretty much forcing me out of the Elder Scrolls Online beta, Mediacom..)...I guess we're pretty screwed.

Thing is, we also get your non-wonderous digital TV. Since it's obvious the caps are dropping because of Netflix/Amazon/Hulu/etc, how about you punish someone else? Oh wait, I forgot, you're punishing everyone all time...I nearly forgot about the twice a month 12-18 hour downtimes.

In this day and age of HD streaming, added to the current economy, a cap/cashgrab is probably the dumbest thing I've seen in quite a while. Thanks tons.

Something to remember before clicking I agree is this SHOULD get u out of any contract your in if u want out. This is a change of service on their end that you didn't agree to it with the contract. This happens with cell phone providers some times. So if you want out and have options then i'd push the issue.

There has been a 250GB cap for a long time, it has simply never been enforced and they didn't charge overages except on the newer plans.

Ours is over 10 years old. I don't like the idea they can just change it on a whim.
