Sales in China fell 6%

Possibly because of China's Huawei & ZTE

Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho, it's Chamber's march to profitability we go [sung to the tune of Heigh Ho]

Was discussing with a few workmates... one of em mentioned that Cisco pissed off Big Blue, while
Juniper was courting them. Then there's Cisco infamous spat / split with HP.

....see how this plays out in the long run...

I wonder if this layof has a lot of their technical folks, and if so this makes me wonder if I should pause my CCNP and go for the Juniper and ALU certs (CCNA equiv). I'm working in all of them on a daily basis and keep thinking that might be the way to go.

I'm not pausing my CCNA studies, because of this announcement.

Chambers was quoted as saying this layoff is due to changes in networking.

I wonder if he was referring to the: Open Networking Foundation (ONF)

Google Trends also shows Cisco laid off employees in 2011 and 2009.

If Chambers gets laid off, I’m available..

I'm a little past half way done studying for my CCNA Security. It would be silly to quit now. The course study material is already paid for and starting over would cost more time and money.

If all the CCNA taught was entirely Cisco-centric then *maybe* it would be worth thinking about adding a different manufacturer discipline. But Cisco are still market leaders (and arguably still set *most* of the standards) by a fairly big margin. Obliquely referring to the "downfall" of Cisco is a bit of a leap. All IMHO of course...

If you go over networking jobs out there, many hiring companies still use Cisco as their primary network infrastructures. Some of the companies even require candidate to have Cisco certification, though Juniper certification as addition never hurts

In short, don't stop pursuing Cisco certifications though they should not be your final goal but more of icing on the cake on top of your practical network engineering experiences.

I've worked for/with a few tech juggernauts over the years, and trimming dead weight from the workforce is SOP. It's good for share price, and keeps people from getting complacent. GE's Jack Welch used to whack the bottom 10% of performers each year, more or less across the board -- if 90% of your cohorts are doing better than you are, it's probably time to reevaluate your skillset, talent, or motivation level.
