Would Sonic.net work for me?

I love the prices and promised speeds of Sonic.net but I would like to know how fast the Service will be when I am 11,179 feet from the local serving office? If it helps I live in 95120.

Where did you see promised speeds ? Assuming you are talking about Fusion, there is no limit imposed by Sonic (most ISP will limit your maximum speed based on the plan that you sign up for). However that does not mean that there are no limits at all nor does it mean that every Sonic customer will get the same speed. Sonic advertises 20Mbps as the maximum speed for a single Fusion line but that rate is only achievable for those who have fairly short lines (some Sonic customers are actually getting even more then 20Mbps since the theoretical limit of the technology is closer to 24Mbps).

Like all DSL based products, the performance of Fusion (ADSL2+) is dependent on the line conditions between the modem and the CO (central office). If you look at the "Fusion average speed/distance" chart (sticky at the top of this forum) you see an average speed at your distance is about 4Mbps. However also pay attention to the scatter plot which reveals that a few people get twice that speed and others less then half at the same distance! Each pair of copper is different and distance is only one of several factors determining the actual performance.

If you expect 20Mbps at more then 2 miles distance from the CO you will definitely be disappointed. However Sonic is a great ISP and well worth it even at "only" 4Mbps.

I live on Mount Forest and am getting almost 15 Mbps down and about 862 Kbps up. Reliability has been excellent except once when AT&T messed something up and my line was completely dead. Sonic had this fixed in one day.
