[Cable] Hemming and hawing between 45/4 unl and 150/10 capped

Man... I hate making decisions. Like many users here, I'm hesitant because I'm averaging 450gb right now on 28/1, so I'm already in the red if I switch to a capped plan.

I suppose I could do 150/10 and implement defensive QoS policies outside of the 2am-8am butter zone, but that feels like a potentially costly gamble if I screw it up, and let's be honest here: QoS on Linux is a twitchy mess.

In an ideal world, I'd get 150/10 unlimited, but at $219 + tax it's a non-starter. The most I'd be comfortable paying for that is around $140, which is already more than double my current bill. So.... any suggestions ? As much as I'd like to stay with TSI, if there is a killer deal elsewhere, I will think long and hard about it.

TSI's 150 plan is pretty poor over all, you might find other providers offer a bigger cap. that being said, TSI has no way of monitoring your usage right now or to charge you more if you happen to go over it right now.

that will likely change in the future tho.

get the 150/10 capped. the overage fee is like $25 or something so who cares ? its like TSI enforces it now. When and if they do you get an extra $25 charge. whoopee doo.

150 is key dude.

Upload isn't counted. Schedule torrent DOWNLOADS for 2-8 am (More accurately, midnight to 10 am, you get some bleeding into peak hours but it's worth it) you'll never go over.

Even if you had two people watching an hd episode of a tv show on netflix every day, that's

4gb, 4x30 = 120

People on webcam chatting (Upload isn't counted) for a couple of hours, depending on the quality of the other persons webcam = 500mb-2gb. let's round up, 2x30 = 60

We're at 180 gb right now.

say you do 5 1080p movies a month, that's about 50gb. So we're at 230.

Let's say 4 HD 1 hour (45 minutes, actually) tv shows a week. That's 4.5gb x4. Now we're sitting at about 250. You've got 50 leftover for whatever, youtube, watching streams on twitch etc. Very very easy to stay in the limit. Although TV shows are a prime example of leaving until 2-8am. If you don't mind waiting an extra day.

Are you serious? I could do 400gb download and they wouldn't be able to tell?

Well I've signed up for Start.ca and will run them side-by-side for a month. Their overage is capped at $25/mo but they do some traffic shaping to cover their asses, fair enough. If I don't like them, I'll switch the extra cable drop to a 2nd TSI line and bond them for 600gb total. Seems legit

You must be downloading a crap load of 1080p porn to be worried about 300gb download cap lol.

I know you mean well, and your math is sound, but you can't assume everyone has that sort of usage pattern.

My wife, on her iPad alone, uses 100gb a month. That's mostly streaming video. As for me, I sit at this thing 12 to 18 hours a day. I work from home as an I.T. consultant, and I admin a pile of sites. At any given time through the day, I have a dozen SSH, VNC and RDP windows up with a few FTP jobs on the go. The only time the 2-8 am window benefits me is for my nightly rsync backups. Torrents and Usenet are a small fraction of my usage.

I work from home as well, and most of my connection is used for uploading so that 10 mbps is going to be glorious, and it doesn't count to boot. You're right, it's not for everyone.

The upload will be nice for those times when I'm mobile, for sure.

There is no cap on the 150/10 plan and there is unlimited overages on it compared to the 45/4.

I was in a similar situation, telecommuter moving alot of data on a daily basis. 2-8am window doesn't really benefit me. Switched from cable to 50/10 VDSL.
