1. More profitable yes but they also have to think about customer satisfaction.

We're dealing with a »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duopoly . The goal of the Exede service is to be more desirable than HughesNet's service and vice versa. I'm thankful for the LNFZ and hope that the two don't engage in »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_fixing .

And unlimited usage is a basic human right ... Suddenlink said 2 years ago that bandwidth is like water.

I had a water meter in every city in which I have lived. The more water that I used, the more it cost me. If water weren't metered, then everyone's rates would go way up as aquifers and lakes would be depleted as it would take more and more money to supply the cities with unlimited water. (In arid or seasonally dry areas, people like to water their lawns, preferring green over brown.)

Edit: The point of the Evolution plan is to offer an unlimited basic communication service - browsing and email. And they offer an unlimited phone service too. I have trouble understanding how unlimited video/audio entertainment could be considered a basic human right.

2. Then they should have have enforced the DAP during the first few months of service and not show that they could handle none metered. I doupt 1 million people would be watching Netflix at once.

And unlimited usage is a basic human right, Suddenlink said 2 years ago that bandwidth is like water. This usage cap thing is recent and unneeded, Google Fiber is testament to that. We don't need the government to finance a thing.

Also with all those people with Dish Network or Directv that are watching those HD movies and TV shows how have they not used up all the bandwidth of the satellite? Heck normal shows would take tons of data itself.

This post obviously is filled with inaccuracies.

1) They didn't enforce the DAP the first few months because a) they didn't have that many customers on the system yet and b) they didn't have a usage meter that was accurate (some might still question this accuracy from time to time .

2) Unlimited internet usage a basic human right? That statement isn't even worthy of a reply.

3) DirecTv and Dish broadcast a few hundred channels to millions of people who select programming off those channels. Satellite internet is sending unique, individual content to each and every one of its subscribers. For Viasat-1, that could mean up to 1 million different pieces of content at one time. To compare satellite television to satellite internet is laughable.

4) Viasat does provide 5 hours of unlimited internet content daily. I am more than thankful for that, as Hughesnet doesn't even give you that.

Don't like satellite internet? Go with some other service such as 4G or DSL or cable. Can't get any of those options? Move, because from the sound of things you are never going to be satisifed with satellite internet.

Where else are you going to go for internet? If you had cable or DSL or fiber as options you'd be using that.

2. Then they should have have enforced the DAP during the first few months of service and not show that they could handle none metered. I doupt 1 million people would be watching Netflix at once.

The point is they COULD and you have to account for that possibility.

And unlimited usage is a basic human right,

No it's not.

HUGE difference between fiber and satellite internet. And you clearly have no clue as to the limitations of satellite internet. The same type of people also don't understand why mobile internet can't be unlimited either. This stuff isn't magic. And it's not an unlimited resource either.

77 TB a month??? That really comes across as compulsive hoarding. I'm not using the misguided medical term "disorder" as many species of trees rely upon hoarding by rodents as a means of seed dispersal. (We're genuinely having some problems with pack rats (wood rats) around here.)

yes but 2 TB = 2048 GB. About 82 times Excede's largest plan.

The forum user was "reporting" about being limited to "only" 2-4 TB per month after downloading 77 TB in a month. I don't see how one person (or household) could actually "process" that amount of data in a month.

This user houkouonchi, was previously kicked off AT&T for his outrageous usage.....I guess he goes from carrier to carrier.

It was in the forums back a while ago. It was funny because, they had a picture of the AT&T Global network center with a huge screen with someone's data usage on the screen, and the guy is captioned saying "houkouonchi must be busy on that node again".....

77TB

Here's how. he was running this server out of his house........And sharing service with LOTS of neighbors.... Verizon forced him to go to GPON (FiOS' Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network) business class service. Didn't state cost.
I'm surprised they just didn't kick him off to begin with since all of what he was going was against TOS, but I figured they'd soak him in $ for a business class service.
(at one time, he was the SERVER for speedtest.net out of CA).....

While the Exede meter was offline, very few people actually treated it like an unlimited connection. Probably no more than a handful of people watched hours of Netflix everyday, downloaded dozens of games on Steam, etc. Make the connection truly unlimited and people would do exactly that. And they have many more subscriber now than they did.

I know I didn't abuse the service when it was unlimited last April. That would create too many bad habits. You can't miss what you never had!

I would love to see a picture of the "Viasat" network operations center. I doubt it is impressive as AT&T's. That looks like something out of Dr. Strangelove (the movie that is).

I eventually figured out that was likely the case as it would be pretty expensive to store all of that data for personal use.

OT:
Oh, I felt the need to explain that my seeming comparison of users of large data to pack rats with a hoarding complex was not meant to be derisive of anyone. (We'll see if that is possible.) 5 years ago or so, I watched some PBS show (Nova or Nature) about the fascinating and threatened Brazil nut tree. There was a part about how it needs bees to pollinate which need other trees which were being cut down, but that's irrelevant. The Brazil nut tree also needs rodents to forage and bury Brazil nuts in underground caches. The rodents cache as many Brazil nuts as they can find, more than they'll ever eat, and the nuts they don't eat can germinate. So my pet theory popped into my mind that some people are just like that in a natural way. And I had recently had a conversation with a neighbor about how pack rats which led to us exchanging stories about how some mice break in and scatter more food than they're going to eat around the house. (A 5 lb. bag of bird seed for him, and cartons of granola for me.) So when I saw that 77 TB figure, I remembered that old pet theory of mine. I admit to being overstocked on batteries.

Most people don't abuse the service even without caps.

Yea. But it only takes a few to ruin it for everyone else

@wildblue.net

Maybe some of you were lucky when the meter was down those couple of months but for me the service slowed down a lot when it was unmetered. Normally I get around 18Mbit connection continuously but when the meter went down it was only 1-2Mbit. It was like old hughesnet speeds again. Going from like 2MB/s to 200KB/s. Especially if you tried to download anything from late afternoon to early evening when most people were online.

So as much as I want unlimited internet I don't believe the system could handle it as I seen the slow downs myself.

I use VPN for the most part... would THAT be covered by "evolution"? I'm sure it wouldn't, but still wanted to ask.

I don't think VPNs are allowed on Exede Evolution.
