Directv Discounts/Free Stuff

I always call Directv around this time of year to get my yearly discounts. (Been with Directv since 2000.) They are still giving good discounts if you call and tell them you are canceling.

This year I got:
$25 off my bill for a year
NFL sunday ticket for free (with 1-yr commitment)
They offered free movie channels etc but I declined.

I have received NFL Sunday ticket for free now for 3 years.

The way I do it is I tell them to cancel my service on a specific date which is the end of my billing cycle. That way if I can't get anything I can call the day before to remove the cancel order, but I have never had to do this.

As always YMMV.

I called Tuesday evening and received quite a deal. I was given $20 off my bill for 12 months, $10 DVR fee waived for 12 months, NFL Sunday ticket(didn't even have to ask), and a genie(HR34/44) and two genie clients, all for free.

Suffice it to say, I'm a directv subscriber for life!

Correct me if I am wrong, but you got 12 month discounts, but since you got the Genie/clients you had to make a 24 month commitment. Right?

I got a similar deal in this past winter, but did not go for the equipment and wasn't offered Sunday Ticket.

Yep, 24 month commitment, which I'm fine with.

What is your approach for doing this, do you threaten to cancel, ask for some sort of long time customer discounts, or something else? I've been with directv for about 2 1/2 years and would like to reduce my bill, and maybe even upgrade the DVD to a genie, but I'm not all that interested in going back to cable.

1.) Works best if not in a contract.
2.) Determine when your billing cycle ends. For example on the bill it may say 8/10 - 9/5. Your billing cycle ends on the 5th.
3.) Call Directv, when the automated system asks why you are calling say "cancel service."
4.) Tell the CSR to cancel your service on 9/5, from the example. You either will get a number of options or moved to the retention dept.
5.) Tell retention you want to cancel on the billing cycle end date if you got transferred, either way when they ask tell them you pay way too much for service.
6.) Take the discount, yes or no to the free movie channels, tell them no again and if they don't offer NFL, ask if have any sport packages they can offer as you really like football.
7.) Enjoy your new discounts and free football.

We've been with directv for 14 years. Currently have 2 DVR boxes and grandfathered in to the Total Choice Classic pkg. I called to upgrade, possibly, to the Genie system (one Genie and one mini). My bill will go UP $13 a month. Are you guys saying your bill did not go up?
1. We were offered the equipment and installation for free.
2. A one time discount of $60
3. $20 off of programming for 1 year
4. $10 off something else for a year.
