atsak join:2012-03-24 Oakville, ON | Help with maximizing speed We have an office in McLean VA, need to use Clear for a backup connection (no DSL or cable). Best I can get is 1-2 bars of signal on a Clear Modem G series. Have tried lots of different angles and areas of the office, by the window etc. The office is up on a hill with lots of trees around it which I assume are causing the problem, and we are on the first floor.
What would the connection guru's recommend here I do to maximize our speed here; should note can't put an antenna outside. Right now we get 1mbit down and 1mbit up. Different modem, antenna? Advice very much appreciated. |
 | I'm no guru, but I would say that when it comes to radio in general, elevation is always good. If you have a second or even third floor, you could try putting the modem there, preferably on a high shelf, and run Ethernet cable downstairs to the computer(s).
Also, if you have an external antenna port, a budget, and enough internal space, it might be possible to mount an external Wi-Max antenna inside the building. By way of example, to improve over-the-air television reception, I've got a small external TV antenna hanging on an interior wall. Of course this is for TV, not Wi-Max, but the principle is the same. The devil's in the details, however. Whether such an approach would help in your specific case is something you could only learn by trying.
Someone else will have to answer the question of whether the current Clear Hub Express is better or worse than the (presumably older) Clear Modem G series. I've had Clear for less than 2 months. All I can tell you in this regard is that I'm near the edge of the dark green part of their coverage map, and I generally get 3 or 4 bars on my Clear Hub Express. |
