Link LoggerPremium,MVM join:2001-03-29 Calgary, AB kudos:3 | 19,000+ Delta flight attendants get Windows Phones quote: Windows Phone is about to rack up some serious frequent flier miles. Delta Air Lines today said that its equipped 19,000 flight attendants with Windows Phone 8-powered Nokia Lumia 820 smartphones.
The airline will use them to run credit cards for flyers who want to buy food, upgrade their seat, rent headsets, and make other in-flight purchases. The flying checkout system, which leverages additional technology from Microsoft Dynamics and Avanade, makes it possible for Delta to offer electronic receipts and couponsplus significantly slash checkout times, the airline said. The phones will also handle passenger manifests, frequent flyer info, connecting gate updates, and flight attendant scheduling updates.

jester121Premium join:2003-08-09 Lake Zurich, IL | Tried a 920 for a week, hated it with a passion. Never experienced a phone that felt so crippled and locked down, even though it ran fine (and has a great camera). But for handing to an employee to run a canned corporate app, I expect it would be perfect.

Wait just one moment Link Logger! We all know you're a software developer, and most software developers develop software on popular platforms to maximize profits. I have to ask, are you getting paid, or compensated by MS to recommend their products? There are plenty of Android phones out there packing much better hardware "maybe not camera wise" with a much larger app and aftermarket accessory ecosystem. Here's a question: If there was a second Lumina 1020 with identical hardware specs, offering the same identical software/hardware functionality for the camera, running 4.3 Jelly Bean, which one would you choose and why? |

Here's a question: If there was a second Lumina 1020 with identical hardware specs, offering the same identical software/hardware functionality for the camera, running 4.3 Jelly Bean, which one would you choose and why? Nope I'll keep the Windows Phone thank you and yes you are correct I am a developer and I will be developing Windows Phone apps in the near future. So why would I do that given the current size of the Windows Phone market? First I believe its market will grow, second the churn rate of apps in the Apple and Android stores boarders on ridiculous as you could have a pretty good app and it would be lost in the sea of fart and other pointless apps in a matter of hours. I hate when people measure stores in terms of number of apps as really it doesn't mean anything, its number of apps that do what you want them to do that matters. The apps I'm planning on writing don't exist in Apple's or Android's stores and they don't exist in the Windows Phone store (otherwise what would be the point of writing them). Toss in I like Visual Studio and their emulators and writing code for Windows Phone makes sense. I have to admit being an older coder I find some of the methodologies to be a tad abstraction overkill or otherwise overly complex, but that is how stuff seems to be written anymore for any platform (pretty easy to see why we haven't been back to the moon however).
Am I paid by Microsoft (or anyone else for that matter, other then residual incomes from previous companies etc I started or invested in), nope. I'm an ISV (independent software vendor) and while I'm a Microsoft MVP (Developer Security »mvp.microsoft.com/en-us/overview.aspx ), I get the pleasure of buying all my own hardware (one reason why I'll have to wait a bit for a 1020 as I only buy unlocked phones anymore). I've had mobile devices since the original Palm Pilot and have had Android Phones and even have a legendary HTC HD2 which I've installed all sorts of different OS firmwares onto and bought Apple devices for my family (which means I've had to learn how to use them etc as somehow I still end up being the support dude), but right now I wouldn't swap my Lumia 920 for anything other then a Lumia 1020.
I did write a number of apps for Windows Mobile and a couple for its store and certainly gave Microsoft lots of feedback on how to improve their store, some stuff they listened to, some they didn't, but making suggestions is something I've done for a lot of companies/products over a lot of years.
But I do love my Lumia 920, because I honestly think its a great device and the Amber firmware update I recently put on it made it better still.

You know Lumia 820 makes a great device because :
1. It's a high end device 2. Superb display and looks 3. It's not "huge" |

Note that they aren't using the phone as a phone. It's being used as anything but a phone; a credit card machine and inventory tracker. So this is all done with a custom app.
iow, that it uses a Windows phone means nothing and I'd bet they went this route (get it?) because Microsoft offered them a hefty discount on hardware and software in order to get its usage up for marketing reasons.
Why would they do that? Cause no one uses a Windows phone. Without looking, isn't its market share less than 10%? The Gardner Group claims it will have 50% market share by next year so they better hurry up.
EDIT: Yep. Windows phone market share is about 4-5%. |

Blake I have seen where the iphone keeps falling...android takes over, etc etc...I have an iphone, it meets my needs...tried android, and unless you go for a phablet as powerful as a gaming box, its a bad experience...and I've "seen" WP8. What I'd like to know is, of someone, who isn't a software vendor or anything like that, but maybe an enthusiast or average consumer, to tell me why they chose their WP8 device, and which one?
I do the usual, some web browsing, lots of texting, lots of emails (exchange server), facebook, instagram, foursquare, etc...other apps needed is stuff like paypal here, my bank...Im just looking for ways to justify a switch to WP8, if I should ever. -- Harry Torres |

Nokia really has helped it take off more than It used to be that's for sure |

Blake I own two restaurants for 28 years and my own web dev company for 10. I also managed the regional office for SGI. If you ever had eye surgery, there's a 50/50 chance equipment I designed was used. I am positive you bought candy out of an electronic vending machine I designed the electronics for, too.
Why? What do you want to be educated on? |

Toss in Delta is a Microsoft Dynamics client and I'd say handing over 19,000 Windows Phones even if they were free was a good idea for Microsoft and no doubt will provide a reasonable ROI in the future. |

The deal just got upped to include 11,000 Surface 2 tablets.
quote: Pilots will use the Surface 2 tablets for charts, reference documents and checklists. All Delta cockpits will be paperless by the end of 2014, a Microsoft spokesperson told us.
Flight attendants will use the Nokia phones as an in-flight cash register to sell drinks and food. It's equipped with a credit card reader and special retail software from Microsoft and a company called Avanade.

Link LoggerPremium,MVM join:2001-03-29 Calgary, AB kudos:3 | I wonder how much Delta paid for the system as it seemed a natural given Delta's already existing MS infrastructure. |

 | I'd be shocked if Delta paid anywhere near full price, or even their volume rate for this. I'd imagine Microsoft is viewing this as a marketing opportunity. Its a good way to get there products out there. |
