jeffkrol join:2004-02-22 Stevens Point, WI | DSL problems after landline service On Tues of this week I had a landline tech check our phone line because it had become "scratchy".. supposedly did something.. Anyway, on Thurs I stared having DSL problems.. as in the Efficient 51000b would lose synch.. or request new synch (DSL green light flash, sometimes red) and it would eventually work again..
Tech support troubleshot the line and thought it was a modem problem.. Well I have spare 5100's so I swapped it out and actually removed the whole house filter AND all our phone lines..
Same problem.. Solid internet then sporadic outage then resync....
I'm at a loss since it is basically a straight shot from the NID to my modem using Cat5 cable.. This eliminates all phones as a source and the whole house splitter.. and as I said tried 2 modems.. (BTW: one annoying thing is I tried calling ATT from work and it seems that since I have a "different" modem they think I need to register, or reregister.. blaaahhhh...
Am I missing something??? |
|
 | was there anything done on the NID box?
if it was a homerun and can't synch...first place I would check is the wire pair inside the NID. |

As to the other part.. Yes the landline tech was all over it Tues.. He left the ATT "your service has been repaired and is working properly.." card LOL |

you do have a splitter inside the NID itself right?
and then from the splitter to your modem via cat5e...right? |
|
jeffkrol join:2004-02-22 Stevens Point, WI | Well actually the cat5 runs from the NID to the splitter on the inside wall from it. Then from the splitter Cat5 to the modem (15ft) It has been that way for 10 years.. :0
As I said I had hardwired the 2 together (removing the filter) and removed ALL phone lines.. The only connection from the NID was directly to the modem.. Still intermittent.. Got ahold of a Motorola ATT modem.... but that failed miserably..never got internet access... I am writing through the 5100b now..
Rechecked the NID wiring.. It is fine.. |

jeffkrol join:2004-02-22 Stevens Point, WI | Oh and any help getting the motorola to work would be appreciated.. B4 pulling it out I managed to look at the network files.. DSL was fine Internet was fail.. A(something something) (some authentication???) fail.. Would like to eventually swap out the 5100b
Netgear router FVS318 reported DSL active.. |

you need a filter coming from the NID to split the voice pair from the dsl / data pair...
from the splitter, the voice pair goes to telephone and the dsl / data pair goes directly to modem...

jeffkrol join:2004-02-22 Stevens Point, WI 2 edits | you misunderstood.. I have a whole house splitter.. Inside is "network" "data" "and "voice" terminals.. NID goes to splitter terminal marked network.. Data goes to DSLmodem.. voice goes to a junction box w/ our phone lines. Been like this for over 10 years..
currently ( reworked all the wiring ... again.. ) things have gotten stable.. I did move the "data" cable away from an AC line, but that has been there "forever" .... It is like this one..
IF it remains this stable I'll need to figure out the Motorola upgrade thing. |

well haven't had time for the internet lately (well as much time) but this AM things were fine till a storm rolled in. Modem went to synch no surf and I needed to reboot it.. Late last night (hot and clear) no problems that I noticed. I'm beginning to return to my orig thought of a line problem.. though ATT assured me all is well... |

curious...
can you take a picture of what your NID looks like inside? |

jeffkrol join:2004-02-22 Stevens Point, WI 1 edit | Sure.. but it is pretty boring..
