[Extreme] Please be careful when selecting which provider you us
About 6 months ago (2013) I was looking at a faster internet service provider. (we had DSL with B - - L) I contacted Rogers 1-866-804-5208 and talked to Adam who immediately got me excited about a "technological Upgrade" we talked about Download speeds of 25 X faster than DSL, and if we bundle we will save a bundle, in fact his price was about $ 60 cheaper than B--L. He even pointed out his cost was with Tax-in. So all we had to do is say Goodbye to B--L's Home phone and internet. We already had Analog Television with Rogers so things looked ok. The first three bills were confusing but correct, as there were pro-rated items on there so that all billings end on the same day. We paid for "installation fees" and to be honest the technician who came to the house had a lot of work to do. Then the July bill came and I noticed that our discounts were about to expire in September, in fact we were now looking at a 30% increase for our services. WTF ? I figured like right. In August we were contacted by a US call center to review our bills and to see if there is something they could do to reduce this 30% increase, I told the woman that I live across from the Rogers head office (Dixie Rd) and that Rogers is a Canadian company and we have no need of an American call center. I hung up on her and went on line and reviewed my bills. I tried contacting "Adam" at that previous mentioned number and that number is now "Rogers Move" Adam is long gone....
I then contacted Rogers and went directly to billing services and spoke with two people the first basically did not go very far, the second person basically has me paying $ 10 more a month for the next 12 months, and then we will talk again.
So if you are thinking about changing please ask the sales agent if this is a promotional costing, in my case it was never mentioned all I heard was, Technological Upgrade, No contract, Less cost than the other guys. I did finally find the Terms and conditions of this promotion on the Rogers web site it took a while its buried so you wont see it right away, with todays technology its a wonder that Adam could not have sent the Link to me by E-mail.
Incidentally my Internet was down the following day and I spent about 5 hours disconnecting everything in my house only to be told that a Technician will be contacting me in 48 Hours (specialist). The next day my internet was ok again. But no phone calls just >please rip apart all your wiring and let me play with your computer have a nice day, enjoy making your wiring look nice again.
As for the paperless billing, its another way of hiding important messages, sure you can go on-line and review your bill, in fact its what I do first thing in the morning.... yah right. You typically look at the first two pages and ignore the rest. Again why cant Rogers notify you by e-mail that; "we are going to charge you more for your Internet, Home phone and Television Bundle as our advertising budget has gone in the Red so you the consumer will need to pay a little more, oh by the way the CRTC said its ok so it must be ok".
If I did any of this in my business, sold someone a control system (were control system integrators) and 3 months into the project requested that my customers start thinking about a 30% increase I might as well close the doors, no one would buy from you, you cannot get 30% anywhere, unless you are a credit card company.
As for Verizon or some other US company trying to get a foot hold into this country, I welcome it with open arms, Technology is being created in the masses for the US (360 Million people) We would benefit from this as the Monopoly that B--L and Rogers has over you is insane.
I am starting to Rant but having gone through this, requires an enormous amount of time, you can buy a car faster than having to deal with these service provider contracts. Why cant it all be simplified ??
