[Extreme Plus] Rogers throttling FTP uploads after a 5-6GB?
Note - I have Rogers Ultimate with a 10 Mbps upload speed and 250 GB per month
Yesterday I was trying to upload some large files via FTP. I successfully uploaded a 1.1GB file and I was trying to upload a second file that was about 6GB. The first 2/3 or so of the file went fine uploading at about 1.1 MBps (which is close to my upload max of 10Mbps) and then all of a sudden my FTP client (Filezilla) would keep failing after about 30-60 seconds - it did this continually and this was at about 11 pm. I tried several other files with the same result.
I tried again after midnight (about 12:15am) and it worked fine again all of a sudden. When I look at my internet usage my upload usage yesterday was 5867MB.
I saw this a week ago when I also tried to upload a 6GB file that once I uploaded a good chunk of the file I saw failures and restarts in Filezilla.
To me it looks like I hit some sort of a daily cap at around 5.7GB and after that my upload speed were throttled until they end of the day. It is also possible that the throttling lasts for a few hours and it is just a coincidence that it started to work after midnight.
Has anyone seen or heard of anything like this?
There is no throttling on Rogers or Bell anymore.
If you're having problems at night, especially weekends it's likely a congestion issue.
I very much doubt that it is congestion as I have never seen this happen except for the two times that I have uploaded an "extreme" amount on a single day. Once I know that it is unlikely that I will be breaching my 250GB monthly cap I will try it again.
I contend that this is a very special type of throttling that only kicks in after you hit a daily upload limit.
And again - remember that this is on the upload speed. From 9:30-11 no issues with uploading consistently at my full 10Mbps. And then, all of a sudden, pretty much no capability to upload? And then at midnight all is well again.
If you don't believe me try it yourself. Upload a 6GB or larger file and see it it goes smoothly or whether it starts to choke when you get near the end?

Saw this on the ideabox today. Perhaps you're on to something.
FYI - my modem is the SMC model that they were giving out a couple years ago and it is in bridge modem so that it does not operate as a router.
