Upgrades - Juniper E-120 - *pictures to come*

Hey guys, just want to advise we will be adding an E-120 BRAS router next to our ERX-310 for ADSL PPPoE. This new chassis has a 120 Gbits SRP and can route up to 15 Gbits of adsl PPPoE traffic.

It will be equipt with a 4 G line module and 8 GigE ports. With it's actual config it will be able to route around 3.5 Gbits of PPPoE traffic.

This new box fully loaded will be able to support up to 30 000 ADSL subscribers.

We shopped for the new MX platform that is able to achive much higher performance (read wire rate) but some core features are just not ready for production so we decided to move onto the proven & robust E platform.

The decision was between an E-320 (who support 30 Gbits instead of 15) and an E-120. Surprisingly the E-120 is more expensive at purchase than the E-320 but it's annual cost is much lower in licensing and maintenance. Based on growth numbers we opted for the E-120.

Our old ERX-310 is still in service on AGAS01 and process around a Gig of PPPoE traffic.

so in total we will have around 4.5 - 5.0 Gbits of capacity for ADSL.

As for cable, the second 10 Gig from the cabledistributor will be ordered soon as we grow rapidly on this side and next step is our 10 Gig from Rogers Aggregated POI for the launch of our cable internet in Ontario expected Q1 2014.

Really? Wow I didin't expect that one. That's good news. I just hope that you guys will be able to support the growth better than teksavvy.

Wow! Really good news on every service!

Good job on the organisation and all, this is really why I prefer this company over other IISPs.

Hey diskace - congrats on e120 purchase! Just curious why you didn't go to MX series with JunOS?

Thanks pstewart, basically Juniper landed us an MX5 during the summer for testing. There was some functions not ready for our environment that Juniper has in the pipeline for Q3/Q4 2014 in R&D. One of them is the drain function for balancing l2tp sessions on multiple AGAS.

Cost wise the MX would have been much better if functions were ready but we did not feel safe doing that in a production environment.

Thanks Diskace... I work around that line of gear often so am always curious....

The MX5/10/40/80 lineup is a pretty cool platform but agree that (especially with l2tp in the mix) it has to evolve considerably yet.

The MX240/480/960 is much further ahead in that regard but obviously in a considerably different price and performance bracket. The E series is (as you mention) very "tried and true" on delivering services... a "safe bet" for delivering PPPOE services when l2tp tunnels are involved.

Have fun with the new gear!

Paul

Cette chose est laide !
Mon routeur est plus petit et clairement plus beau

Plaisanterie mis à part : quel est donc le poids de cet équipement ?

51 lb pour le châssis uniquement et 107 lb en configuration complète. C'est du bon gros routeur

Thansk.

Actually we were comparing an MX480 with the E120 or E320. We just feel the MX platform is not ready for l2tp. We discovered bugs in the testing and don't want to be in the early adopters. I am sure Juniper will come up with fix rapidly as they seems to push hard on the MX platform for l2tp instead of the E series but we want proven reliability. Not too surprisingly, Electronic Box is now more conservative in it's choice of hardware. Over the years we went through a lot of promising technology and ended up pissed off

The E120 is around 100k. Curiously the E320 is a bit cheaper than the E120 but has a much higher maintenance cost (20k/year for our setup vs 12k/year on the E120). The MX480 is cheaper than the E120/E320 and has a very low maintenance cost (5-6k/year) so that was the original goal.

We already have a MX480 for core routing and BGP and it's a solid router for that purpose.

Thanks Diskace... we are actually in the process of deploying another MX480 in our operations network. This new MX480 will be the first MX we have deployed that has some l2tp tunneling (Bell wholesale) coming into it so it will be "interesting" to see how things work out haha... for the MX's we have deployed running PPPOE (without l2tp) they have been pretty solid along with other M and MX's for MPLS/BGP etc

I can't comment on pricing in a public form as much as I'd like to
