[Speed] [Boston, MA] Slow Evening Speeds

Hey there. I noticed some postings on the forums here that have a pretty similar or perhaps the same problem as me.

I'm on a 25/2 plan but I usually get half the download late in the afternoon or early evenings. Once it hits 8PM Eastern, speeds drop to 7Mbps and then down to about 3Mbps. Sometimes speeds drop as low as 0.48Mbps. Upload is unhindered and is usually at a solid 2.

The other threads posted recently seem to have possible resolutions, so I suppose I'll try my luck.

My encoded MAC is 09cbb056e1965a6a3701a80a49344bfd1e732355

Thanks for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Is that plugged in directly into the modem, or through a router? If you are going through the router, are you connected wireless or ethernet?

What are your upstream and downstream power levels

Just post the entire page of results (cut and paste).

I'm connected through a router with an ethernet cable. Connecting through the router or directly to the modem yields similar results. I've connected directly to the modem, removed the battery from the modem, waited a few minutes, restarted my computer, and I'd still get similar speeds.

Here are the Upstream and Downstream results.

Downstream
Freq/Power: 669.000 MHz 5 dBmV
Signal to Noise Ratio: 39 dB
Modulation: QAM256
Upstream
Freq/Power: 30.700 MHz 45 dBmV
Channel Type: DOCSIS 2.0 (ATDMA)
Symbol Rate: 5120 kSym/sec
Modulation: QAM64

Just trying to rule out obvious problems. You upstream power level is much higher than mine, but it isn't out of spec.

I have noticed a wireless computer using an N-wireless works fine, but a G-wireless works at normally about half speed (12-16 Mbps). I do not have a good explanation.

There is equipment on order for this, we're kinda in a holding pastern until we get the stuff.

Ah, that's some good news I suppose. Do you happen to have an estimated time frame of when they'll receive the equipment and work out the problem?

Thanks for looking into the matter.

Ok, so after having to call RCN every almost every night for a week, they replaced my old DOCSIS 2.0 modem for a 3.0 modem. This was at the end of October. Since then, speeds have been stellar. They've been high and stable, until yesterday, or perhaps the day before.

Speeds have been dropping to 12mbps and much lower later into the night. Hard-wiring into the modem yields the same crippling speeds.

Did someone spill coffee or something?

Hoping this gets fixed.
