[Network] Question.

Can you use another dsl modem/router instead of the one windstream supplies you?

As far as the modem is concerned, I'm pretty sure if you don't use something approved by Windstream they won't/can't help you when you have issues.

I was not provided with a router by Windstream; I'm not certain they offer one, but the router you use shouldn't matter.

You can use a different/3rd party router or modem as long as it will authenticate with our network. The downside is that the limit of our troubleshooting with a product that we do not provided would be to powercycle the modem, maybe reset it, and potentially assist with putting the username and password in it although the last part is not required of our technicians due to liability reasons. We will not do any troubleshooting beyond that, and more often than not you will be referred to the Original Equipment Manufacturer for most issues (i.e. Linksys), and they will probably charge you to assist in troubleshooting. Typically your best bet is to go with the modem router options provided by whoever your ISP is to avoid any unnecessary issues.

I have to disagree because most modem/router combos supplied to you by your ISP for free are mediocre or under-performing. Good examples include the sagem fast 1704 and the speedstream 4200 and higher models. Customers give more complaints on the connection drops and forwarding confusion on those devices more than anything. You're better off spending good money on a quality adsl modem/router, or just a new router and modem. By the way, sagemcom is partnered with Windstream and the router/modem combos they distribute are outdated by 2 years. Also, they're a French networking Corp, which implies they create what would be ideal for French dsl, not American.

Which part do you disagree with, I apologize for my confusion. Typically the best bet for the average user is to go with ISP provided equipment simply because it is supported by ISP and tech support will troubleshoot the product. Most Technical support groups within any ISP will not troubleshoot any 3rd party equipment short of power-cycling it, which typically only resolves simple issues. However you are free to use whatever equipment you would like.

I'm disagreeing with your logic on using the ISP provided setup. Most likely, it's cheap and inexpensive for them to fund. You can look it up everywhere that most supplied equipment Is trash and full of ****. If you want the best experience, just research and buy your own device(s).

I've seen your other posts on this forum, and while I am in the same boat as you when it comes to piss-poor service for a majority of the day and agree that it is outrageous, I can say for sure it's not the hardware. Before my area because over-subscribed I didn't have any problems with my 4300 modem, and I use a cheap Netgear router that I've never had a problem with.

If you have the option available, I'd just find another ISP. Unfortunately there are many of us who don't.

Yeah, I'm stuck with windstream, and I hate it! They never upgrade their network, they're ******* lazy and carefree about customer complaints and service. Like I get peak hours during noon it's just that bad.

In simple terms, they're running their corporation into the ground with so much trouble and private investigations, and I hope they get the **** knocked out of them by someone willing to buy their trashy concepts out and capitalize on a better/reliable network.
