Geeze, sort of sounds like porn when I phrase it that way!

I just threw up.

I really hate toolbars as well.

The site's been getting worse aesthetically lately. Gigantic blue section at the bottom and now this constant toolbar at the top of the screen.

I really, really don't like it. Really hope this ends up being an option instead of a forced change. Too many companies force changes on people and ruin things for those who can't accept said changes. Almost impossible to find one who gives their users options in present time.

Edit: Oh good, it has options, and an off selection (but the options in said toolbar, or 'minibar' are broken, have to go to the dedicated page for it). Too bad that doesn't get rid of the permanent user account link in the top right, which wasn't there before IIRC. At least it's not part of a toolbar.

the mini-bar options popup is not broken, unless your browser isn't executing javascript on the site.

It's a good thing that you posted that link, because about 12 hours later, I tried to adjust the position of the Minibar by using the spanner icon ON the bar, and it does not obey when asked to 'Save', and if you check afterwards, it shows that the previous position is still selected.

Your link however DOES work in that regard.

ALSO, I just now tried to ADD that link to the minibar by using the 'plus sign' button interface, and it seems to work, up until when I hit the 'next' button, and then the new icon vanishes again.

Wassup ?

I miss the "old" position as well...

I don't like the way the top toolbar follows me down the page. On a widescreen monitor, vertical space is already at a premium.

I find the left option to be a little better....

So do I, but it loses the beacon for incoming IMs (I just would like to see a beacon on the minibar in the left [and right, I suppose] position choice, not necessarily the name of the sender (which itself could remain at the top).

Does anyone else agree ?

works for us.
no guarantees in IE8, but I'll check it out some time.
especially no guarantees in that copy of IE6 you seem to own.

edit:

it would be simpler, for me at least, and probably for you, to first check if something is misbehaving for your account in a current browser, and if it behaves ok there, simply post "can you check out why such-and-such is not working in IE8 some time?"

Why are you being so closed-minded about IE8 ?!

More people use it than you believe ( I can appreciate the joking about IE6 though ), and you are alienating loyal users with some of the new changes, such as this, when you ignore our needs by not testing thoroughly.

Yes, it would, and please assume that I have tested it in another browser, as I have stated on many occasions that I have them.

I could incorporate "I use IE8" into my signature, if that would help.

So the spanner icon to change mini bar settings does not work for you in a more recent browser than IE8 ?

Everything looks like it works but it does not stick?

It's also not working in Safari 6.x.x. I just tested it.

You are right, and I apologise.
See I am deeply distrustful of reports of broken things when I see IE8.
The state saving works now, as does the +, it was the same problem.

My feelings on IE8 remain the same, a post from earlier today:

IE8 is down to 10% share and when you consider the 9% of people who don't get to choose what browser they run, because they are sitting on a company PC that they dare not or cannot touch, that just leaves 1% of users voluntarily using it when they have a choice. Even on XP.

And you want me to become part of that 9% ?

I/we am/are not currently sitting at a DSLR company PC, and as such, until I/we am/are on your payroll, you really should not be publicly pushing so hard against our use of IE8, even if those stats about it declining ARE true, even if you sincerely hate IE8, and/or even if the stats get lower for IE8 as more time passes.

IE8 is NOT that old of a browser yet (OTOH, IE6 however is), and is supported by 3 versions of Windows which are themselves still widely used, as I posted in more detail earlier in the bigger thread. »Re: Something changed, and if it isn't a bug, I don't/do like it

= = = = = = =

Also, how do you know that this 9% of folks (which you mentioned) are not being forced to use FireFox, or Chrome, and WOULD use IE8 if their bosses let them ?

Plus Sign Changes Colour and to a Minus !

said by justin:

one thing that I always forget it has, is the green + next to the spanner.

if you're on a page you go to frequently, where it shows green, click it, and decide what icon you want for the page by using the popup.

If it is a red +, then that URL is already there.

I just discovered that difference moments ago.

I have not tried to add to that bar in all of the time that I've posted here.

OK, my retest in IE8 shows that the Minibar position works again when executed from the spanner icon (may have to refresh after changing on the first time, for the browser cache to catch up, then good after that on repeated changes of it).

It always did and still does work when done thru the full menu.

= = = = =

As for the ADDING of icons to the Minibar, I had not tried that before tonight, and so do not know how it USED to behave.

What it does now, after the fix, also in IE8, is that it follows thru, but seems to NEED a screen refresh to actually show the added icon, but does not prompt me to do one.

= = = = =

And I have learned about how to remove icons from the Minibar, in that you seem to need to first GO to the page of the one which you wish to remove, before it will offer to let you remove that particular icon.

You've been on the internet a long time you've never seen a user interface change that (for you) wasn't 100% positive?

When AOL redesigned their site in 1995, I was ecstatic just like I am about these 24x24 toolbar icons .

J/K, I don't see the problem.

What's with this toolbar? I prefer the old way. I hate toolbars.
Dslr is starting to look 'junky' or whatever.
Please put it back the way it was before.
Just my 2cents.

I like the toolbar, I have it set up like bookmarks to navigate around dslr, if you don't like it just go into settings and shut it off, its as simple as that, it's amazing how ppl don't like changes, here dslr is trying to improve it's system and right away ppl go off the handle, I tested the toolbar feature and played around with it and like it very much!
Keep up the good work DSLR.

Would YOU like it if Pepsi changed their flavour to be more like Coke's ?

I have a feeling that you would be unhappy.

Plently of folks WERE, back when Coke tried doing just the opposite.

There is nothing wrong with familiarity and with choice.

Some change has purpose and some seems only to be done for its own sake.

IMNSHO, we have seen some of each category here recently.

Most of it I can work around, but there are a few examples where I should not HAVE to.

And I have said so.

As I mentioned in my post, just disable the toolbar and that's it, or if dslr would like to take a vote on this matter maybe they just might remove the toolbar permanently.

Are you seriously comparing the end-of-life of a small and long superseded part of the user interface to the "new coke" debacle?

I didn't mention the toolbar in my last post.

Actually, I haven't used it a lot, but I might in future, given all of the attention it has received from some of the OTHER folks posting here.

Oh, and BTW, I do prefer Coke over Pepsi.
