"Growing pains" for companies are real. A small company can get over problems by shear effort - a few all nighters by the main staff. Once they get a certain size that is no longer possible due to the amount of work involved requiring more people and time. A manager can manually fix 1% of customer accounts without severely impacting their other duties when you have 10,000 customers but when you have 200,000 customers they can't. (100 vs 2000 accounts to fix requires different approaches).
