Re: Pergo question said by StillLearn:Pull the baseboard, install flooring, and replace baseboard? That would be good. As old as his house is it is very likely even running a blade across the tops of the base board will not stop him from having to at the least touch up the paint and (which won't match). He did talk about maybe painting the room as will so might not be a problem.
As old as the house is the floors will not be completely flat, and base board will not bend like shoe mold will even for little cracks. I have installed many hardwood floors and have never done one without shoe mold. Shoe mold is designed bend to cover small cracks (1/8"-1/4") between the baseboard and the floor. Imho always install shoe mold. |

Just trying to be helpful here.. Did you see an ENT???
I had allergies for years, and was told about dust and dust mites too.. Change the bedsheets, buy dust mite protectors, yada yada.
I was on nose spray and 2 pills.. Always questioned my allergist(s) about why I still have problems in the winter when my primary allergies are summer seasonal..
Well, l finally went to an ENT, and they discovered my deviated septum.. Right nostril..almost always stuffed and clogged even after a new bed, protective pillow cases and a HEPA filter, dust mite powder for the carpet....
Turns out the right side of my nose was so deviated, that the slightest allergy basically shut it. It wasn't all the bad things my allergist told me about, it was the fact that since my septum was practically shut, ANY allergen would cause the minimal swelling resulting in no drainage and the always stuffy feeling.
An allergist would never check for this, heck they just keep prescribing pills and sprays.
After I had the septum surgery I found that I practically have cut back on pills and sprays and only use them during my personal allergy season (ragweed, trees, etc) And I get drainage now, so my nose is not stuffed all year round. And im not taking allegra D all year around like I used to
And another thing, I always believed I was allergic to perfume and cologne, because it would irriate the hell out of me.. I would run from the stuff.. Turns out, I wasn't allergic, it was that since my nose was so irritated and stuffed, the slightest irritant such as perfume just made the situation worse.
Before the surgery when I would do a neti pot rinse, the water wouldn't flow out of my right nostril, now it flows right thru with no problem.. what a big difference
hope this helps |

Back in our old house, I decided to replace the hallway carpet with Pergo flooring.
All I had was a circular saw [used for rough cuts only], and a box and miter hand saw. The box allowed be to get the fine cut I needed, and only cost me 20 bucks at Home Depot. Granted the Hally was was only 4 feet wide and about 20 feet long [It was shaped like a staple, for an easy description]. The wife and I have no experience in home improvement, and while we did a great job on the floor, I kinda hosed the trim or what ever it's called. -- Is a person a failure for doing nothing? Or is he a failure for trying, and not succeeding at what he is attempting to do? What did you fail at today?. |

Yes that's true. In my case it was pretty much closed..I then remember that someone had sucker punched me as a kid, real hard.. and that may explain why it was that bad.
In any case, I myself, noticed a BIG difference after the surgery, breathing wise.. It was like someone unclogged a slow draining pipe.... And now ,while I still have allergies, with my nasal passages draining properly, my quality of life is much better and I only take the meds and sprays during my seasonal allergy time, which happens to be this month! |

I once used a miter box with hand saw as well. I finally got a compound sliding miter saw and 'WOW' is all I can say. The miter box is like a hand grenade. It's close but not perfect. The compound miter saw on the other hand is dead on every time. I wish I bought one YEARS ago! |

I was in Home Depot and I was maybe going to consider using the cheaper stuff but then I noticed that the cheap stuff came from China.
 Off label
The Pergo comes from the USA.
 Genuine Pergo
Let's not forget the Chinese drywall crisis. I wouldn't want to have to explain to the landlord why she has a toxic mess on her hands.
Update 9-28: I took more detailed measurements of the man cave by moving things around and placing the tape measure on the floor. Length is 160" and width is 116" so about 128.9 Sq ft.
So I'll need about 7 cartons of the flooring I have picked out. Covers about 20 Sq ft a carton.
Too bad I couldn't buy the underlayment cut to length like electrical wire and carpet. It comes in 100 Sq ft rolls and I'm going to have to buy two rolls. I'm buying the cheapest underlayment I can get since it's our kitchen underneath. If there was another apartment underneath, I'd go for the Floor Muffler. -- I've experienced ImOn (when they were McLeod USA), Mediacom, Comcast, and Time Warner and I currently have DirecTV. They are much better than broadcast TV.
I have not and will not cut the cord. |

| reply to IowaCowboy After really giving it some thought I've decided to go with a cheaper material considering I don't own the property and the real reason behind the project is allergy control so I went to both Lowe's and the Depot and picked up some samples of flooring that are 99 cents or less a square ft. Like Jack_in_VA said, the Lowe's "Project Source" brand is some pretty decent flooring.
Lowe's charges for samples but they give you a bigger sample. The Depot gives you a small sample but they're free. -- I've experienced ImOn (when they were McLeod USA), Mediacom, Comcast, and Time Warner and I currently have DirecTV. They are much better than broadcast TV.
